Job Title: Control and Instrumentation Engineer Working Location: Cardiff Contract Type: Permanent Industry: Chemical and Process Manufacturing Why This Role Stands Out You will: - Own the full control and OT estate for the site as the single subject matter expert - Have genuine influence over safety systems, alarm philosophy, and cyber standards - Play a key role in the capital projects portfolio, not just break-fix work - Benefit from contributory pension, annual bonus, private medical, and a strong holiday allowance - Work in a stable manufacturing environment with real investment in your development Key Responsibilities - Act as the site's technical authority for control systems and OT/IT infrastructure - Make controlled programming changes to the DCS and PLCs, following proper management of change and commissioning processes - Set and maintain site standards for alarms, overrides, cybersecurity, and IEC 61511 compliance - Manage the site's protective systems, including interlocks, trips, and SIL-rated functions - Maintain wider infrastructure from controllers and networks through to historians, servers, and backups - Investigate plant performance issues through structured investigation and root cause analysis - Support the Engineering Manager with planning and controlling control-system and IT budgets - Act as subject matter expert on capital projects that involve control and OT scope - Coordinate with group-level and shared-service teams on standards, strategy, and issue resolution - Promote a safety-first culture and ensure full compliance with UK legislation and site SH&E requirements Requirements - Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Control Systems, or Instrumentation and Electronics - Strong background with modern distributed control systems, covering both software and hardware architecture - Familiarity with virtualised control system environments (VMware / Hyper-V), including replication and failover - Hands-on PLC experience across platforms such as Allen-Bradley and Siemens, plus SCADA and ladder logic - Functional safety certification to 61511/61508 for safety instrumented systems - Working knowledge of OT cybersecurity practices and management systems - Structured problem-solving skills, comfortable with 5-Why, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies - Experience on a live chemical manufacturing site is advantageous Benefits - Contributory pension - Annual bonus - Private medical cover - Strong holiday allowance
