What you’ll do
- Develop detailed cost estimates for highway and bridge construction projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness in all bids.
- Analyze project plans and specifications to identify potential risks and opportunities, providing insights to the project management team.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, and subcontractors to gather necessary information for comprehensive estimates.
- Prepare and present bid proposals to management, highlighting key aspects of the project and justifying cost estimates.
- Monitor and evaluate project costs throughout the construction phase, making adjustments as necessary to stay within budget.
- Conduct market research to stay informed about material costs, labor rates, and industry trends that could affect project pricing.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits to gain a thorough understanding of project requirements and conditions.
- Maintain accurate records of estimates, bids, and project documentation for future reference and analysis.
- Assist in the development of project schedules and timelines, ensuring alignment between cost estimates and project deliverables.
- Mentor junior estimators and provide guidance on best practices in cost estimation and project analysis.
- Foster strong relationships with vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and reliable service.
- Support the business development team by providing technical expertise during client presentations and negotiations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in estimating for highway and bridge construction projects.
- Proficiency in estimating software and tools, such as Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or similar applications.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards related to highway and bridge projects.
- Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail and accuracy in cost estimation.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to clearly convey complex information to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while also demonstrating strong independent problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations governing highway and bridge construction.
- Proven track record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
Nice to have
- Professional certification such as Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) or similar credentials.
- Experience with project management software, such as Primavera or Microsoft Project.
- Knowledge of sustainable construction practices and materials.
- Previous experience working with government contracts or public sector projects.
- Bilingual capabilities, particularly in Spanish, to enhance communication with diverse teams and clients.
