Part‑Time Lecturer – Harry Potter and the Order of British Icons
Kingston University Summer School 2026 offers international students the opportunity to study on either a two‑week or four‑week programme. All classes are fully accredited, carrying 3 U.S. / 6 ECTS credits, and combine academic teaching with experiential learning through relevant field trips in and around London.
We are seeking a part‑time lecturer to design and deliver the Summer School module Harry Potter and the Order of British Icons. The course will be taught to a small cohort of international students, primarily from the United States, through a combination of classroom teaching and guided site visits across London’s cultural landmarks and institutions.
About the Module
This interdisciplinary course explores iconic figures in British fiction through literature, film, and popular culture. Drawing on critical and scholarly perspectives, the module examines cultural texts as repositories of national stories, myths, and ideologies. While celebrating the work of J. K. Rowling and the enduring popularity of Harry Potter, the course situates the series within a wider tradition of British heroic fiction, including figures such as Sherlock Holmes, Frodo Baggins, James Bond and Doctor Who. The module investigates genre, narrative structure, heroism, villainy, and character construction, while also exploring changing attitudes towards gender, class, sexuality, and national identity in British culture. Lecturers are encouraged to bring their own academic specialisms and perspectives to the design and delivery of the module and we are open to new approaches to the existing module.
Candidate Profile
It is vital to the success of the Summer School that international students feel welcomed and supported whilst they are away from home. We seek candidates who can care for and connect with our students, offering pastoral support where needed and acting as a friendly host. The successful candidate will also:
- Have experience teaching in higher education, ideally in English literature, cultural studies, film studies, or a related discipline
- Be enthusiastic about teaching in multicultural and international learning environments
- Demonstrate an ability to create engaging, discussion‑led teaching sessions
- Be confident leading educational field trips and site‑based learning activities in London
- Have experience designing course materials and assessments at undergraduate level
Teaching Format
Teaching will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 13 July and 6 August 2026. There is flexibility regarding class timings within those days. At least half of the teaching is expected to take place through field trips and guided visits to relevant venues, museums, and cultural sites across London. The successful applicant will also be required to attend the Summer School exam board and present final marks, likely to be held online on 13 or 14 August 2026. Pay will be approximately £2500, to include preparing the syllabus, all delivery, marking and attendance at a final examination board.
