Role Overview

Kingsgate are recruiting for an experienced Building Surveyor with strong technical knowledge of construction technology, who is able to head the Latent Defect Investigation team. This role requires the successful candidate to travel to different locations and accurately diagnose Latent Defects in new build properties. The successful candidate will be able to combine their hands‑on technical knowledge with strong communication skills, as they will be required to share the findings of their investigations with external parties such as Surveyors and Loss Adjustors and make recommendations as to the cause and the correct remediation of the defects. The Building Surveyor will also support other areas of the business, by providing technical input based on their original investigations to other members of the Team working on pricing and delivering the remediation works.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake intrusive investigations and surveys to diagnose Latent Defects on various different properties.
  • Produce technical reports detailing the findings of the Investigations, identifying the causation of the defects and recommendations to remediate the defect.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to the team on complex building details, defects, and construction methods.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and contractor proposals to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, schedules, and advice notes for internal teams and clients.
  • Support pricing exercises by advising on the correct scope of works, materials, and construction methods.
  • Check site works periodically to make sure correct details are being adhered to.
  • Stay up to date with changes in building regulations, best practice, and new construction technologies.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to the team’s overall technical competence.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in Building Surveying, Construction Management, or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of building pathology, detailing, and construction techniques.
  • Experience diagnosing defects and recommending practical, cost‑effective solutions.
  • Proven ability to interpret and prepare technical drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills — able to explain technical matters clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good IT skills, with proficiency in surveying software, Microsoft Office.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Skills

  • Chartered (MRICS) or working towards chartership.
  • Experience in insurance‑related surveying or loss adjusting.
  • Familiarity with JCT contracts and contract administration.
  • Experience advising project teams and mentoring colleagues.
  • Knowledge of modern methods of construction, sustainable materials, and emerging technologies.
