The Head of Subject, Computer Science plays a pivotal leadership role in driving excellence in teaching, learning, and student achievement within the Computer Science department. Working in close collaboration with the Executive Head and wider leadership team, the post-holder provides strategic and operational leadership to ensure the delivery of a high-quality, innovative, and inclusive Computer Science curriculum. The role focuses on raising standards of attainment, developing outstanding teaching practice, and ensuring strong academic outcomes for all students through effective curriculum design, data-informed decision-making, and staff development. As a key middle leader, the Head of Subject is responsible for leading and supporting teaching staff, contributing to whole-school improvement priorities, promoting student wellbeing and safeguarding, and actively shaping the school’s vision, ethos, and academic direction. The role combines strategic leadership, curriculum innovation, staff line management, and a commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and academic excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership of the Computer Science department in line with school priorities.
  • Lead the development and review of a high-quality Computer Science curriculum.
  • Monitor teaching and learning to drive continuous improvement.
  • Take accountability for student attainment, progress, and outcomes using assessment data.
  • Maintain schemes of work, curriculum resources, and subject documentation.
  • Ensure high standards of assessment, feedback, and academic tracking.
  • Lead quality assurance processes, including observations and departmental evaluation.
  • Line manage staff, supporting performance management and professional development.
  • Model excellent teaching practice and support effective pedagogy.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders and support teams to secure strong student outcomes.
  • Contribute to whole-school improvement and strategic initiatives.
  • Promote high expectations for behaviour, engagement, and safeguarding.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, and the wider community.
  • Promote Computer Science through enrichment opportunities and events.

  • Proven experience of successful teaching and leadership within Computer Science or a related subject area.

  • Experience of leading, managing, or mentoring colleagues to improve teaching and learning.
