The King’s IT Department provides support to the senior and junior schools, Wimbledon Common Preparatory School (WCPS) as well as KCS Enterprises and King’s International, under The Corporation of King’s College School. The IT Technician will join a wider team that includes six other technicians. Although roles within the team are separate, colleagues work closely together from the same office, sharing knowledge as much as possible and training together on new technologies.
This is an opportunity to join a highly regarded team and to assist in the day-to-day use of IT across the school. The role is to help administer and maintain the school’s IT systems, primarily by supporting users: resolving tickets appropriately, keeping service users informed of progress in line with departmental service levels, and supporting or undertaking IT projects. The work is technical, but its purpose is people centric: supporting pupils in their education and the staff who teach them.
Key responsibilities:
Day-to-day support
Provide assistance to staff and pupils on IT issues by the most appropriate means and in line with service levels, primarily through first- and second-line support, including classroom technology, device support, and access issues.
Log, prioritise, and resolve helpdesk tickets end to end, in a timely manner corresponding to case priority and agreed service standards, and keep service users informed of progress.
Test, configure, build, and deploy user devices, including Windows desktops, laptops, and tablets, iPads and Macs, digital displays, phones, and classroom docking stations and screens.
Support the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of staff and pupil devices and peripherals across the school, including hardware faults and the school's printers, liaising with the external printer supplier as required.
Create and manage user accounts, both manually and via PowerShell scripts, support the exam network account process, deal with routine network connectivity problems, and carry out simple network administration tasks.
Support the school's telephone system.
Provide training to users as part of a complete support package, and write, edit, and revise training manuals, FAQ pages, and other publications in support of IT assistance.
Escalate complex issues to the senior team members as appropriate, and liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including external contractors, to progress projects and support tickets.
Provide service desk coverage, and support other systems, in the absence of other team members.
Department projects and tasks
Contribute to project tasks, including implementation, technical configuration, and testing, and provide handover to other team members on completion.
Carry out routine maintenance of workstations and other IT facilities, including software updates and device lifecycle activity for staff and pupil devices, and keep documentation of new and existing systems up to date in line with the agreed update schedule.
Maintain the asset register for all devices, assist with the renewal of software subscriptions, and keep a working understanding of software licensing and its impact on device configuration and support.
Assist with sourcing new equipment and redistributing existing equipment, with the installation and rollout of new software, and with the installation and configuration of new equipment such as computers, access points, and portable devices.
Assist with the setup, management, and support of laptops and other IT for internal and public examinations.
Contribute to team discussions to help shape and improve the support provided, and undertake other tasks that might reasonably be expected of the team, in agreement with the individual.
