The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) has an exciting opportunity for a Flow Cytometry Technical Manager to join the Faculty Technical Services Team. The post holder will provide management, technical and operations service and leadership to the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) Flow Cytometry Facility ensuring high quality support to scientific research.

The post holder will have direct responsibility for setting up the new Faculty Flow Cytometry Facility and its day-to-day running. They will ensure that all facility equipment is maintained in optimum working order, provide up-to-date specialist technical expertise, advice and support in the field of flow cytometry and cell sorting. They will work with users of the Flow Cytometry Facility to provide training in a range of flow cytometry and cell sorting techniques and advise on sample preparation and experimental strategy, assist with data acquisition and analysis, data management, interpretation of results and preparing data for publications.

The post is funded by the Faculty to support the Faculty Flow Cytometry Facility to deliver high-quality technical support to the researchers in all our Schools (Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences, Life Course & Population Sciences, Basic & Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, and Immunology & Microbial Sciences) and, where relevant, the Centre for Education. The post will be based primarily on the Guy's campus and will work closely and collaboratively with local School Technical Managers and staff hosting the FACs equipment. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week) and you will be offered a fixed-term contract for 3 years from start date.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

  • Essential criteria
  • Level 6 qualification, e.g., relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent, plus substantial work experience in relevant technical/scientific service posts OR extensive work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts with management experience and/or qualification.
  • Comprehensive technical experience and knowledge in flow cytometry and cell sorting techniques, including instrument use, maintenance and troubleshooting, experimental design, data acquisition, analysis and interpretation.
  • Knowledge of the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and their environmental impact.
  • Experience working in a flow cytometry facility or similar environment, including training users across a range of skill levels and a commitment to service delivery and user support.
  • Strong operational management skills, with excellent planning and analytical skills, able to manage complex resources, budgetary control and reporting.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with advanced computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills to build a strong network to support the delivery of the service.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.
  • Knowledge of environmental impacts of laboratory work and an interest in reducing the negative impacts.
  • Evidence of an active commitment to professional development, such as working towards CSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.
  • Desirable criteria
    • Formal Health & Safety qualification e.g., NEBOSH/IOSH.
    • Experience of supervising/advising junior team members, giving feedback on performance levels and training/coaching where necessary.
    • Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required.
