About us

The Senior Communications and Engagement Manager will support King\’s College London\’s new multidisciplinary research institutes in building their reputation and profile among key audiences including current and prospective students and staff, relevant academic communities, funding bodies and Government, and across the media.

About the role

The Senior Communications and Engagement Manager requires a balance of skills across internal and external communications, engagement, and digital.

The post holder will be adept at identifying, researching, and developing proactive communications campaigns and compelling news stories, features and content. They will work with colleagues across King\’s multidisciplinary research institutes, central and faculty-based communications teams and external collaborators to raise the profile of the new institutes and increase visibility and engagement through digital content, including the development of web pages, targeted social and external media, impactful events, compelling internal and external campaigns, launches, supporting partnerships and other activities to engage key communities in the work and mission of the institutes.

King\’s new multidisciplinary research institutes bring together expertise from across the University and its partner organisations to help address complex global challenges. King\’s Human and Synthetic Minds Institute aims to build a stronger scientific, historical, social and cultural understanding of intelligence. It brings together neuroscience, physics, engineering, humanities, and arts to explore human and artificial intelligence and creativity in novel ways. King\’s Population Health Institute is dedicated to tackling health inequalities through developing a new model of precise and personalised health for population health. To achieve this, the institute will work collaboratively with King\’s Health Partners, NHS, and community partners in the South East London area. The post-holder is expected to support the internal and external engagement for the institute to increase visibility and impact of population health activities.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week) and you will be offered a fixed-term contract until 31 July 2026.

This is currently a hybrid working role where the role holder will spend part of their working week on campus and part of the week working remotely. Flexible working requests/patterns are welcomed.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. First degree and professional communications qualification, or demonstrable equivalent experience
  2. Significant experience of communications and marketing at a responsible level
  3. Significant experience of increasing internal and external engagement through communication channels and products
  4. Ability to understand and translate complex themes and messages for internal and external audiences, alongside expertise in how to create and communicate those messages in credible and impactful ways
  5. Excellent creative writing, ability to adapt to multiple styles and uses, editing and proofing skills with an eye for detail
  6. Advanced digital skills including experience in managing social media channels, creating targeted social media campaigns and working with website/newsletter/contact databases, CMS systems, video and podcasting technology
  7. Demonstrates strong leadership and interpersonal skills to build relationships across the University and with external strategic partners (eg. NHS, KHP) to positively influence and drive the right outcomes
  8. Experience of measuring reach/impact of communications and of using the data to underpin communication and engagement activity

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of working in higher education, funding councils and/or Government.
  2. Experience of working cross-organisationally in a complex environment with competing priorities
  3. Experience in developing communications for senior stakeholders, including policy makers and government officials
  4. General understanding of the NHS and population health landscape
