Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) is increasingly central to the diagnosis and management of a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. However, the clinical impact of CMR is currently limited by timeāconsuming reporting workflows and the scarcity of specialist expertise required to interpret studies. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) offer new opportunities to streamline, standardise and enhance CMR reporting, but robust integration of these technologies into real clinical environments remains a major challenge.
The role will be based at King's College London, working closely with clinical teams at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and embedded within the multidisciplinary ecosystem of the London Medical Imaging & Artificial Intelligence Centre for ValueāBased Healthcare. The project includes collaboration with NHS partners and industry stakeholders to ensure that the reporting interface is technically robust, clinically usable and ready for translation into routine practice.
This post will support the development and early implementation of an NHSāready, AIāassisted CMR reporting interface (edgeCMR). The role is intended to establish the technical and clinical foundations required for subsequent externally funded research programmes, while delivering immediate benefits for clinical service delivery, including improved reporting efficiency, standardisation, and risk reduction within routine CMR workflows, integrating locally deployed AI models, LLMādriven clinical text generation and interoperability with hospital systems through HL7/FHIRābased communication. The overall aim is to replace existing thirdāparty reporting software with a clinicianācentred, flexible and fully customisable workflow tailored to the requirements of modern CMR practice.
A particular focus of this position will be the development of the reporting interface and its underlying data pathways, including:
- Building structured and interactive reporting tools that incorporate LLMāassisted drafting and realātime clinician editing;
- Integrating local AI outputs (e.g., quantitative measurements and imageāderived biomarker) into structured templates;
- Ensuring reliable communication with electronic patient record systems (e.g., EPIC) through HL7/FHIR mechanisms;
- Supporting userācentred evaluation and iterative refinement of the reporting environment.
This is a fullātime post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixedāterm contract until 31st March 2027. Research staff at King's are entitled to at least 10 days per year (proārata) for professional development.
Essential criteria
- PhD or equivalent (or thesis submitted*) in at least one of the following subjects: Computer Science, Machine Learning, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related area.
- Demonstrated competence in machine learning, including experience with medical image analysis, computer vision, or related AI methodologies.
- Experience working with large language models (LLMs) and/or NLP pipelines, including prompt engineering, fineātuning or evaluation.
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative software development environment and to engage constructively with colleagues from diverse academic and clinical backgrounds.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage tasks independently, meet deadlines and work calmly under pressure.
- Strong software development skills in Python, with experience integrating ML components into larger software systems.
- Experience with modern machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and related tooling.
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical ideas clearly and to collaborate with staff across different levels and disciplines.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of medical imaging, particularly CMR, and/or familiarity with DICOM and clinical imaging workflows.
- Experience with medical image analysis or computer vision packages and associated toolkits.
- Experience with healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR) or integration with electronic patient record systems.
- Experience with standard software engineering practices, including version control systems (e.g., Git), software testing methodologies and collaborative code development.
