About us
The Department of History at King’s College London is one of the largest and most dynamic centres for historical research and teaching in the UK. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and final years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students’ expertise in medieval, early modern and modern history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. We particularly value conversation between scholars of different periods and places, with different approaches.
About the role
The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer specializing in the History of Empire. The post-holder will help to research and coordinate ‘King’s Past’, a project on the history of King’s College London and its relationship to empire and other forms of power. They will help to develop and maintain a project website, liaising with King’s Digital Lab and the College archives. They will be responsible for teaching the module 5AAH9I01 Investigating the Colonial Past of King’s College London, as well as leading public engagement activities in this area. In addition, they will teach on the modules 4AAH0001 Historical Skills, Sources and Approaches and 5AAH0001/5AAH0002 History and Memory, as well as developing new specialist modules in their own area of expertise and making contributions to MA provision in the department.
This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
- Essential criteria
- PhD qualified in relevant subject area
- Expertise and experience in the creation of digital resources, including websites and databases
- Excellent research expertise and record in the history of empire, relative to career stage
- Ability to devise, teach, convene and assess undergraduate and postgraduate modules relating to the history of empire
- Ability to engage students, support their learning and wellbeing through their degree
- Experience of effective and diligent academic administration, external networking and public engagement, e.g. in relation to the King’s Past project
- Evidence of a collaborative ethos, capacity for team-working and enthusiasm for engaging with other colleagues
- Experience of teaching and supporting students at postgraduate level
