This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated 0.5 FTE Lecturer (Education) to join us to contribute to the MSc Clinical Psychotherapy programme at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London (IoPPN, KCL) and deliver specialist research-led teaching commensurate with their field of expertise.
Based at Denmark Hill and with key links to the South London and Maudsley Trust, the IoPPN is a Faculty of King’s College London and the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). The IoPPN's greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of both its research strategy and educational activities, providing unique opportunities for students and staff.
The appointment will be made at Lecturer level on the Academic Education Pathway, where the primary contribution is to education (80% of role) and secondary contribution to scholarship which is primarily education-focused (20%). The role will include module leadership (to be agreed with the successful applicant) as well as lecturing and other teaching, assessment and personal tutoring. The AEP contract is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. The following expectations are associated with the AEP: teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, education-related research and administration.
The role requires a skilled educator to teach postgraduate students on topics related to psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice and psychotherapy research methodology. The successful candidate needs to be able to enhance the education and experiences of our postgraduate students, delivering appealing teaching and contributing to the development of our curricula, teaching and assessment methods. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing design of the MSc in Psychotherapy programme, in conjunction with the Programme Lead, e.g., in response to student feedback.
The scholarship component of the role stands at 20% and is expected to be substantially, although not entirely, education focused. Research interests are likely to relate to a pedagogical area or one that impacts on the student experience and/or leads to evidence-based teaching. However continued research in another field is also possible, within the framework of the role. The content of a member of staff’s workload will be decided in discussion with the Head of Department or line manager.
This is a part-time post (17.5 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract. The post will be available to start from 1 September 2025 or earlier in the summer if desired.
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
- Essential Criteria
- PhD, DClinPsy, MD(Res) or equivalent in relevant subject, but will consider applications from candidates who can demonstrate significant clinical experience in place of this, as long as they also fulfil the essential criteria related to education/teaching experience.
- Experience of module leadership or similar role.
- Experience of designing and delivering excellent teaching and assessment for postgraduate students, in person and/or online, particularly in relation to quantitative research methods, including excellent IT skills and experience with virtual learning environments (e.g., Moodle).
- Clinical expertise in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
- Expertise in research methods, psychological sciences.
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, alongside good organisational and administrative skills.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research projects.
- Demonstrable understanding of, and commitment to, working within the principles of culture, equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Higher Education accreditation/qualification (e.g. Advance HE Fellowship or PGCAPHE).
- Understanding of the UK Higher Education environment.
- Experience of providing pastoral support and guidance to postgraduate students.
- Experience working as a psychotherapist in the NHS.
- Registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council.
