About Us

King’s History department is an internationally recognised centre for the study of the history of the world. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and third years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students’ expertise in medieval, early modern and modern world history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. About The Role

King’s College London History Department is seeking to appoint a temporary AEP lecturer in medieval European history for the academic year 2025/6 to cover the assigned teaching of Professor Alice Rio. The successful candidate will contribute to modules across the undergraduate and taught Masters programmes, including a survey course on ‘Medieval Worlds 300-1500’, ‘Sociology of the Middle Ages’, ‘After Rome: Western Europe, Byzantium and Islam’ and ‘Encountering and Researching the Medieval’. It is also likely that they will contribute to skills, methodological approaches and thematic modules at undergraduate and Masters levels, including the third-year undergraduate module, ‘Nations’. The role holder will also provide administrative and pastoral support for the Department of History, as directed by the Head of Department. The postholder will be appointed on an Academic Education Pathway (AEP) contract and will be encouraged to exploit all the opportunities offered within the department to use the post to further their own general career development and teaching practice. The post cannot be renewed at the conclusion of the period of the appointment. This is a full time-post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31 August 2026.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

  • Essential Criteria
  • PhD qualified in relevant subject area.
  • Expertise in medieval European history.
  • Experience of teaching relevant to the areas specified by the department, with clear evidence of potential to deliver innovative, effective and enjoyable teaching.
  • Some experience of effective and diligent academic administration and academic and/or external networking.
  • Desirable Criteria
    • Teaching in Higher Education qualification (such as fellowship or associate fellowship of the Higher Education Academy).
    • Knowledge and/or experience of designing and delivering online teaching.
