The Handyperson will support the maintenance of the university estate by carrying out a wide range of basic repairs and upkeep across electrical, mechanical, and fabric disciplines.
This role includes planned preventive maintenance (PPM), reactive fault response, minor installations, and ensuring compliance support, all delivered with a focus on safety, efficiency, and minimal disruption to university operations.
The role will ensure completion of all mandated Health & Safety training, including e Learning modules, within required timeframes to maintain compliance with statutory and organisational standards.
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance tasks across university buildings, including basic repairs to electrical, mechanical, and fabric components.
- Undertake planned preventive maintenance (PPM) such as lighting checks, fixture inspections, fire door checks, water temperature monitoring, and plant support tasks.
- Respond to reactive maintenance issues including minor plumbing, minor electrical faults, basic carpentry, and repairs.
- Support minor installation works such as fitting shelves, noticeboards, and signage.
- Perform general duties including clearing blockages, adjusting fixtures and fittings, and conducting visual condition inspections.
- Assist with statutory compliance checks such as emergency lighting tests, water hygiene routines (e. g. flushing), and fire door inspections.
- Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Report any observed hazards or compliance issues to line management promptly.
- Use the university's CAFM (Computer-Aided Facilities Management) system or mobile device to record work activities, complete job tickets, and report faults in real time.
- Communicate progress, outstanding issues, and material requirements to supervisors clearly and promptly.
- Participate in training to maintain awareness of best practices in health, safety, and compliance.
- Support junior colleagues and apprentices through mentoring or on-the-job guidance where appropriate.

Essential criteria
- Essential criteria 1. Demonstrable experience in a general maintenance or building handyperson role
- Essential criteria 2. Basic skills across multiple trades (e. g. plumbing, carpentry, electrical, decorating)
- Essential criteria 3. Practical knowledge of safe working practices and health and safety regulations
- Essential criteria 4. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively and complete a variety of tasks
- Essential criteria 5. IT literate use of i Pad / Share Point / Emails / MS Teams / CAFM reporting
Desirable criteria
- Desirable criteria 1. Relevant trade qualification or certification (e. g. basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry)
- Desirable criteria 2. IPAF/PASMA qualified
- Desirable criteria 3. Previous experience in a multi-site or large-scale institution (e. g. university, school, hospital)
- Desirable criteria 4. Awareness of statutory compliance elements (e. g. legionella control, emergency light checks, PAT testing)
- Desirable criteria 5. Experience using CAFM systems (e. g. Planon)
