The research component of this post will comprise working as part of the Skin Health Theme at St John's under the supervision of Professor Catherine Smith. This post supports our translational research in inflammatory skin diseases, rare skin disease, and skin cancer, including acquisition of carefully phenotyped biosamples to understand disease mechanisms, clinical trials and digital health. You will work as part of and be supported by a large, well-established multi-disciplinary research team with a strong track record of high-impact translational research. You will be fully embedded into the clinical service, with regular participation in clinical and other service activities encouraged. There are opportunities to present at national and international meetings, and you will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of clinical research from design through to delivery and communication of results.
Responsibilities:
- Work as part of the Skin Health Theme research team, contributing to translational research in inflammatory skin diseases, rare skin disease, and skin cancer.
- Acquire carefully phenotyped biosamples to understand disease mechanisms and support clinical trials and digital health initiatives.
- Embed within the clinical service and participate in clinical and other service activities.
- Present work at national and international meetings as opportunities arise.
- Receive comprehensive training in all aspects of clinical research from study design to delivery and communication of results.
- If wishing to develop an own research interest/project, pursue it with a view to a higher degree (MD/PhD); if funded, transition to a full-time MD/PhD Fellowship and cease to hold the Clinical Research Fellowship.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training as appropriate.
- Be based at Guy's Hospital, with willingness to work at other locations owned or served by the Trust as required by the service.
Full-time post (40 hours per week) on a fixed-term contract until 31/03/2027, with on-site working as stated.
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
- Full GMC registration with valid license to practice in the UK
- MRCP or equivalent
- Broad-based general professional training in general medicine with proven general medicine experience
- Proven track record of Dermatology training and experience
- Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team and establish good relationships with patients and staff
- Understanding of principles and applications of clinical research
- Knowledge of Good Medical Practice and clinical management, with contribution to clinical audit and risk management
- Excellent computer literacy (email, Word, Excel, databases)
Desirable:
- Post/approaching CCT in dermatology
- Dermatology procedural skills including skin biopsy
- Evidence of original research and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Experience of interventional studies or large-scale observational studies
- Experience of undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training
