Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Metabolic Research Unit, a dedicated nutritional research facility for studies involving participants, within the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King\’s College London. The post is suitable for an experienced, organised, and highly motivated research nurse, paramedic (or related healthcare professional) to provide support to a dynamic research department as a Senior Clinical Operations Officer. The appointee will be a State Registered Nurse, paramedic, or closely related healthcare professional with phlebotomy skills (including cannulation experience) and personal indemnity cover. They will support research studies investigating the role of nutrition in the prevention and management of chronic disease and/or promotion of health. Strong all‑round communication skills and flexibility are essential. The post holder will be based at the Waterloo campus and will report to the Academic Lead for the Metabolic Research Unit (Prof Wendy Hall) and the Departmental Technical Manager (Mario Mazzantini).

Note: This is a part-time role (21 hours per week) with a fixed-term contract for 12 months. The preferred working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday, with an ideal distribution of hours across four mornings.

Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day clinical research, teaching & training, financial, operational and administrative functions of the Metabolic Research Unit.
  • Perform venous cannulation and phlebotomy; coordinate the sharing of resources among users; provide first aid; ensure Good Clinical Practice and adherence to health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct additional research duties associated with running human nutrition studies; ensure all trial standard operating protocols are adhered to on clinical nutrition study days.
  • Liaise with academic and research staff; provide health and safety, first aid and phlebotomy training to new research students and research assistants.
  • Manage facility and salary costs charged to research grants and consultancy projects; handle quotations, invoicing and financial reporting.
  • Work closely with the Department\’s Research team to provide administrative and clinical support, including developing a recruitment database of clinical trial participants and managing a shared mailbox and calendar for enquiries.

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: Registered Nurse, paramedic or closely related healthcare professional with active registration with the NMC or HCPC, and recent practice experience; personal medical indemnity insurance.
  • Proficiency in venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Excellent organisational, prioritisation and attention to detail; reliable and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to negotiate and influence at all levels.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office, especially Excel) and experience with administrative databases and management information systems.
  • Flexibility to start earlier if required (07:00/08:00).
  • Strong data management and document control skills, including maintaining electronic and hard-copy records.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of financial planning, including budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Experience of working in a higher education institution or research environment.
