King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit qualified Band 5 Paediatric Staff Nurses for Toni & Guy Ward.

Toni & Guy Ward is a 15 bedded general paediatric inpatient ward, it also is a shared care centre for oncology patients and a tertiary centre for Cystic Fibrosis and Haemoglobinopathies.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop your paediatric nursing skills within a specialist tertiary centre, caring for children and young people with a diverse range of conditions while working as part of a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

• Your main responsibility will be the clinical care of children and young people who are inpatients on Toni and Guy ward.
• Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating individualised nursing care.
• Providing safe, effective and evidence-based care to children and young people with general paediatric, oncology, respiratory and haematology needs.
• Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure excellent patient outcomes and experiences.
• Supporting children, young people and their families throughout their inpatient journey, promoting family-centred care and shared decision-making.
• Recognising and responding appropriately to changes in a patient's condition and escalating concerns when necessary.
• Administering medications, treatments and therapies safely and in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.
• Supporting, supervising and acting as a role model for student nurses and junior staff.
• Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation and records.
• Participating in quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities and service development projects.
• Demonstrating a commitment to continual learning, professional development and the delivery of high-quality care.

• Delivering high quality, evidence-based and patient focused clinical care through:
• Delivering a high standard of evidence-based care to patients.
• Ensuring good standards of care for the patient are maintained at all times.

Working effectively as part of the immediate team and wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) through:

• Liaising effectively with all members of the MDT to ensure patients’ needs are met.

• Providing support and advice to ward/unit staff (especially junior staff) on clinical and administrative issues.
• Liaising with discharge coordinator / bed manager to ensure effective admission/discharge of patients.
• Keeping the ward/unit sister / charge nurse informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problems.

• Observing a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital.
• Ensuring the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Kings College Hospital NHS Trust Foundation together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations are adhered to at all times.
• Maintaining patient confidentiality, dignity and privacy at all times.

• Working with appropriate members of the teaching staff to ensure effective staff development (own and others).
• Participating in Trust and Divisional initiatives to develop nursing practice and support change.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

• Paediatric Registered Nurse with active UK NMC registration at time of starting appointment
• Knowledge and Experience
• Awareness and understanding of current acute health issues
• Understanding of NMC Code of Professional Conduct
• Acute experience within a paediatric setting

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations
• Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members
• Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
• Proficiency in dispensing and administrating oral & IV medication
• Proven record in teaching/mentoring/supervising others
