Applications are invited to apply for a 10 PA specialty doctor post in Oral Medicine based on our King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation sites: King’s College Dental Institute, Denmark Hill.

The weekly job plan includes sessions in Oral Medicine outpatients' clinics, facial pain clinics and supervising, dental core trainees and providing specialist advice to other clinical colleagues in other dental disciplines.

The Oral Medicine department is situated within King’s College Dental Institute and celebrated 100 years of being based at Denmark Hill in 2023. The department is situated on the ground floor in the consultants’ clinic which consists of 10 consultation rooms and works closely with the adjacent King’s College Medical Hospital. The Oral Medicine team is also based at the Gillies Unit situated on the second floor of the main Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup.

Applicants must have a GDC registerable U.K. dental qualification or equivalent and be on the specialist list for oral medicine or be eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.

Main duties of the job

Together with the other members of Oral Medicine Team, to provide a service for all oral medicine patients at King’s. This includes all aspects of clinical treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.

Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the clinical lead.

Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the department’s/ Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Together with the other members of Oral Medicine Team, to provide a service for all oral medicine patients at King’s. This includes all aspects of clinical treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
2. Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
3. Clinical supervision of junior medical and dental staff as a shared responsibility with other colleagues.
4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
5. Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the clinical lead.
6. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the department’s/ Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
12. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
13. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
14. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

• Registration with the General Dental Council
• Completed at least 4 years full-time or part-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent)
• Wide experience in all aspects of oral medicine or equivalent.
• Successful completion of dental foundation training and dental core training (or equivalent)
• Experience in day to day organisation of oral medicine (or equivalent) services in a busy Teaching Hospital
• Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.
• Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement. Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change.
• Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
• Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff
• Flexible and resilient
• Professional attitude towards work, reliability, good record of attendance and tidy personal appearance
• Able to demonstrate an understanding of Kings Values.
