Consultant Anaesthetist with special interest in Pain NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant Main area: Anaesthetics. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Full time – 40 hours per week (10 PAs). Job ref 213-MED-PRUH-7788369 Employer: King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Site: Princess Royal University Hospital. Location: Orpington. The remit is to work within the multi-disciplinary team to provide and develop care for patients at the PRUH and South Sites.

The role includes responsibility for Pain services at PRUH & South Sites, involving managing clinics, ward-based pain management, and Pain intervention lists. The post holder will provide and develop Anaesthetic and Pain services to the Trust’s patients and will play an active role in teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at the PRUH, Orpington, Sidcup and Beckenham sites. The proposed Job Plan up to 10 PAs is attached and is subject to review within 3 months of starting. The On-Call commitment is 1:12 rota (Category A). There is a commitment to undertake routine job-planned work on Saturdays or Sundays as part of the total job-planned PAs. All employees are expected to undertake work on Trust sites as required. As a senior employee, you will work with and support other clinical, medical, and managerial colleagues to provide high-quality healthcare.

  • The provision of a first-class clinical service
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP
  • Undertaking work in accordance with Trust procedures and policies
  • Conducting clinical practice within contractual requirements and service plans
  • Maintaining confidence in business plans and development strategies for the specialty, Care Group or Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality care to patients, including all treatment and related management duties for the Care Group’s proper functioning
  • Shared responsibility for 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis; cover colleagues’ annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract
  • Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners with other consultants
  • Carry out teaching, examinations and accreditation duties; contribute to CPD and clinical governance
  • Outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group
  • Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in line with the Trust’s R&D framework
  • Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance and Learning from Deaths
  • Contribute to the Care Group’s Business Plan and service developments with internal and external agencies
  • Work within the contracted level of service and operating plan
  • Provide professional leadership for all staff in the specialty and support ongoing professional education and training
  • Support productivity and job satisfaction, including involvement in peer/junior appraisal where appropriate
  • Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with management
  • Comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies
  • Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistent with evidence-based practice and patient safety
  • Support the Trust’s commitment to Consultant-led 7-day services

Person specification

Qualifications & Higher Qualifications

  • Full FRCP Fellowship in Pain
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Name on GMC Specialist Register on appointment date
  • On the interview day, applicants must be within 6 months of CCT or in final stages of portfolio pathway, or fully registered on GMC Specialist Register

Training and Experience

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Anaesthesia and Pain, culminating in CCT or completed portfolio pathway

Administration

  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy teaching hospital
  • Familiarity with IT and general computer skills
  • Familiar with the current NHS structure and recent initiatives

Management and Leadership

  • Demonstrable leadership within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit and Quality Improvement

  • Understanding of medical audit principles
  • Experience completing audit projects
  • Audit publications

Research and Publications

  • Experience of clinical research
  • Publications of relevant reviews or case reports

Teaching

  • Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Teaching skills course/qualification
