Senior Clinical Fellow in Orthopaedics with interest in knee surgery

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at Denmark Hill and will be reviewed within 3 months of commencing. The Knee Unit provides a wide range of surgical experience, including primary and revision knee arthroplasty, ligament reconstruction, partial knee replacement, osteotomies around the knee, osteochondral transfers, and the use of a Mako Robot for robotic arthroplasty. There is also opportunity for research and teaching within the Knee Unit and the wider Orthopaedic department. The post-holder will contribute to the annual FRCS revision course and other teaching as required. Independent operating may be possible, depending on the skills and experience of the post-holder.

Detailed responsibilities

• Work with other colleagues to provide a service for patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
• Share responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24‑hour, 7‑day coverage for the Unit on a rota basis, and cover colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short‑term sickness.
• Participate in multi‑disciplinary meetings.
• Contribute to audit and clinical governance programmes.
• Attend outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
• Contribute to the Care Group research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
• Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programmes and learning from Deaths.
• Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for the service(s).
• Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced, possibly including involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
• Be aware of and comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
• Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence‑based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Person specification

• FRCS Orth or equivalent.
• Proven experience as Specialist SpR training in trauma and orthopaedics.
• Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.
• Valid ATLS.
• Completion Certificate of Speciality Training (CCST).
• Fellowship in Trauma or Knee Surgery.
