The Trust provides a full range of local hospital services across its different sites, and specialist services from King’s College Hospital (KCH) sites at Denmark Hill in Camberwell and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site in the London Borough of Bromley.

The Anaesthetic department at Kings is delighted to advertise this SCF in Anaesthesia post to cover for a period of 6 months with option to extend. This post is aimed primarily at senior anaesthetic trainees, or qualified anaesthetists wishing to gain experience in a broad range of anaesthesia as well as further experience in regional anaesthesia. We deliver anaesthesia for a range of general and subspecialty areas including Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracics, Hepatobiliary, Endocrine, Maxillofacial, Liver Transplant, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Major Trauma.

This post would be suitable for any Doctor looking for a senior fellowship. Although this Senior Clinical Fellow post is not accredited for training, the appointee will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the Department and the Hospital. The appointee will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to undergo annual review and appraisal. Annual leave and Study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors.

Main duties of the job

  • All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust's sites as required by the service.
  • As an employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP.
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies.
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans.
  • Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • This is a replacement post. King’s College Hospital requires senior clinical fellows in anaesthesia to work flexibly within the multi–disciplinary team at the Denmark Hill site providing and further developing care for patients particularly within cardiac, neuro and obstetric anaesthesia.
  • Clinical duties include delivering anaesthesia under consultant supervision for general surgical, orthopaedic and other clinical specialties, and involvement in post-operative care.
  • Trainees are also expected to help with airway management and transfers for imaging of patients in the ICU.
  • On call duties will be rotated between the cardiac recovery unit, labour ward and main theatres.
  • This post would be suitable for any Doctor looking for a senior fellowship to achieve CESR accreditation or a post CCT Fellow looking for further specialist experience.
  • We have a proactive encouraging approach to doctors wishing to achieve CESR and have successfully supported a number of colleagues through the process.
  • Although this Senior Clinical Fellow post is not accredited for training, the appointee will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the Department and the Hospital.
  • The appointee will have a named college tutor and educational supervisor and be expected to undergo annual review and appraisal.
  • Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors.
  • The post will be based at the Denmark Hill site of King’s College Hospital and performance will be reviewed within 3 months of the postholder commencing in post.

Person specification

  • Full registration with GMC with License to Practice.
  • Proven post-graduate experience in anaesthesia.
  • Evidence of excellence in training e.g. prizes, QI, publications.
  • Previous work in intensive care.
  • Completion of resuscitation courses such as ALS, ATLS.
  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff.
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.
  • Good standard of written and spoken English to facilitate communication with patients, healthcare professionals and other staff.
  • Flexible and resilient.
  • Professional attitude towards work, reliability, good record of attendance and tidy personal appearance.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of Kings Values.
