This post has arisen following the retirement of the current post holder and provides valuable continuity within the Radiology governance and quality structure. The successful candidate will support the coordination and delivery of governance activities across all Radiology modalities, ensuring safe, effective, and high-quality imaging services.

Working closely with the Clinical Lead for Governance, Head of Imaging Services, and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the ongoing development of robust systems for clinical audit, risk management, incident review, and quality improvement. You will also play a key role in maintaining compliance with national standards including IR(ME)R, CQC, and QSI, and in promoting a culture of openness, learning, and continuous improvement.

This role would suit an experienced Radiographer with a strong interest in quality, governance, and patient safety who is seeking a flexible opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the continued excellence of the Radiology service at King's.

Main duties of the job

As the Radiology Governance Superintendent, you will play a key role in coordinating and delivering the governance, quality, and patient safety agenda across all Radiology modalities at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Working collaboratively with the Clinical Lead for Governance, Head of Imaging Services, and Divisional governance teams, you will ensure robust systems are in place to monitor, report, and continuously improve imaging quality and safety.

  • Lead the review and learning process from incidents, audits, and patient feedback; support compliance with national standards such as IR(ME)R, CQC, and QSI; and oversee policies, risk registers, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of openness and continuous learning, helping embed lessons into daily practice.
  • Provide expert advice on governance processes, support the preparation of governance meetings, and contribute to audit, peer review, accreditation, and staff training in patient safety.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Governance and Quality Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the Radiology governance agenda across all Trust sites, ensuring robust systems for quality, safety, and risk management.
  • Support implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), overseeing timely investigation, documentation, and learning from incidents.
  • Maintain oversight of Radiology risk registers, Datix incidents, complaints, and claims, ensuring themes are identified and action plans are implemented.
  • Support the development, review, and harmonisation of Radiology policies, procedures, and protocols across all sites.
  • Monitor adherence of IR(ME)R and IRR 2017 regulations, working closely with Radiation Protection Advisors and Medical Physics Experts.
  • Facilitate regular Radiology governance meetings, including preparation of agendas, reports, and action logs.
  • Promote a culture of transparency, learning, and continuous improvement through regular feedback and shared learning across modalities.

Quality Improvement and Audit

  • Support delivery of the Trust's clinical governance and quality improvement framework within Radiology.
  • Lead or contribute to clinical audits, service evaluations, and peer review processes to drive service enhancement.
  • Collaborate with the Patient Outcomes Team and Radiology leads to ensure data collection and reporting supports improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure audit outcomes and governance findings are translated into meaningful, sustainable service changes.
  • Promote innovation by identifying opportunities for improvement and sharing best practice across modalities and sites.

Education and Training

  • Provide education and mentorship to staff on governance, quality, and patient safety principles.
  • Support staff to understand their roles in incident reporting, duty of candour, and quality improvement.
  • Deliver training sessions and debriefs following incidents or audits to embed lessons learned and strengthen governance awareness.
  • Collaborate with Education Leads to develop and maintain training materials and resources relevant to governance and compliance.
  • Contribute to the induction of new staff, ensuring awareness of Radiology quality systems and processes.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Lead for Governance, Head of Imaging Services, and Divisional Governance Teams to ensure alignment with Trust priorities.
  • Act as a point of contact for governance-related queries, providing expert advice and guidance to Radiology staff and managers.
  • Prepare concise, accurate reports for governance meetings, divisional boards, and external regulators.
  • Liaise with internal and external partners including CQC, NHSE, and South East London Diagnostics Collaborative as required.
  • Promote open communication within Radiology, ensuring that safety alerts, key updates, and learning from incidents are widely shared.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Adhere to the professional and ethical standards set by the Society and College of Radiographers.

  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with data protection, information governance, and safeguarding requirements.
  • Undertake regular CPD and reflective practice to maintain up-to-date knowledge of governance, quality, and regulatory developments.

  • Comply with all Trust policies and procedures, including infection control, health and safety, and safeguarding.
  • Contribute to departmental initiatives that promote inclusion, sustainability, and staff wellbeing.

Infection Control

All employees are expected to follow infection prevention and control protocols and maintain high hygiene standards, in line with the Trust's Infection Control Policy and the National Code of Practice.

Safeguarding

All staff must complete mandatory safeguarding training and be familiar with internal safeguarding processes. Concerns must be reported in accordance with Trust policy.

Person specification

  • Current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.
  • Postgraduate qualification in a diagnostic imaging discipline or equivalent level of theoretical, specialist knowledge.
  • Master's degree in healthcare or management or demonstrable ability to work at Masters level.
  • In depth knowledge of legislation pertinent to the role.
  • Evidence of substantial clinical experience and ability to function at level required of the post.
  • Experience of working in partnership with multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing change within a clinical environment.
  • Thorough understanding of IR(ME)R and IRR.
  • Ability to collate and analyse statistical information for presentation to high level groups.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to all levels of an organisation.
  • Advanced written skills with experience of different writing styles including reports, action plans, summaries and policies.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of critical appraisal skills.
  • Experience of Trust policy development and implementation.
  • Technical knowledge of equipment and quality assurance.
  • Knowledge of government policies relating to the NHS.
  • Full range of IT skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with a wide range of staff with differing levels of responsibility and different professional backgrounds.
