Pharmacy Technician, Rotational

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team of registered pharmacy technicians based at the Denmark Hill site of Kings College Hospital. This role offers the opportunity to experience different areas of hospital pharmacy, working in the dispensary, clinical service and the aseptic manufacturing unit. The post holder will take part in the department 7 day working rota, which involves working either Saturday or Sunday as part of a 6 week pattern. The postholder will also be required to work 1 bank holiday a year.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Participate in a rotation covering aseptics, dispensary and clinical services.
• Gain practical experience and assist in the delivery of the service in each section.
• Work towards becoming an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) when in dispensary.
• Complete an in-house validation training manual and become a validated in-process accuracy checker when in the aseptics rotation.

Policy/Service Development

• Ensure the safe, effective and economical use of drugs for all patients in the Trust.
• Responsible for the implementation of new or revised policies and procedures specific to the dispensary, medicines management or aseptic services.
• Pro-active in the regular review and update of dispensary, medicines management and aseptic policies and procedures.
• Propose changes to working practices and dispensing techniques that will maximise efficiency and safety.
• Participate in the training and supervision of staff working in the dispensary, medicines management or aseptic Service.
• Check Patients’ Own Drugs (PODs) for use during inpatient stay.
• Support the Dispensary Manager, Lead Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Services and the Chief Pharmacy Technician, Aseptics, in the development of the service.
• Attend and contribute to any regional and national meetings in relation to pharmacy services.
• Provide the final accuracy check on clinically screened dispensed prescriptions in the dispensary and be a validated checker in Aseptics.
• Use Trust EPMA computer systems to order non-stock medication and endorse POD assessments.
• Work independently and follow departmental SOPs and dispense medication accurately.
• Use pharmacy computer systems correctly, enter data accurately and ensure that data is stored and archived appropriately.

Person Specification

• Knowledge of all regulations and legislation relevant to pharmacy, dispensary and clinical services.
• Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems.
• Experience post registration relevant to hospital pharmacy practice with assessed competencies.

Education and Qualifications

• GPhC recognised Level 3 pharmacy technician qualification.
• Registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
• Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification.
