To work as a member of the Orthopaedic Therapy team assisting the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists to provide a high standard of patient care by undertaking delegated clinical duties. The post holder will assist with the rehabilitation of Orthopaedic patients, progressing treatments in line with departmental protocols. The post holder will also undertake administrative duties to support the functioning of the department. The workload will include outpatients, inpatients and community working (e.g. patient’s homes). The post requires a flexible approach to working and requires the post holder to undertake weekend commitments as required.

Main duties of the job:

  • Manage the rehabilitation of own caseload of patients as delegated by a therapist.
  • Assist with the care of patients as required in preparation for their treatment programme.
  • Provide treatment to patients in line with established treatment programmes.
  • Progress patients undergoing routine therapy programmes in line with established protocols, reporting back to the Orthopaedic Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist as required.
  • Recognise changes in the condition of a patient, and manage in accordance with local procedures.
  • Monitor patients’ physical and cognitive function whilst undertaking a range of activities and report changes to the Orthopaedic therapist.
  • Measure and use identified outcome measures.
  • Apply, remove and progress the use of therapeutic equipment as instructed by the Physiotherapist.
  • Measure, adjust and supply equipment to patients in their own homes before discharge and demonstrate to the patient and carer the safe usage of equipment.
  • Assess the safety of patients completing activities of daily living in line with agreed protocol.
  • Assist therapists with discharge planning.
  • Assist the Orthopaedic therapist with individual/group treatments/exercise classes.
  • Accurately record clinical interventions within the patient’s clinical records, in line with Therapy and Trust standards for documentation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • General duty of care for own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
  • Observe rules, policies, procedures and standards of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
  • Observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
  • Be responsible, with management support, for own personal development and actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
  • All employees must hold an “nhs.net” email account which will be the Trust's formal route for email communication.
  • Be aware of own Health and Safety responsibilities, including infection control and cleanliness of own equipment, undertaking mandatory training, abiding by the hand washing policy and other policies related to Barrier nursing.
  • Take an active part in assistant meetings, including role of chair.
  • Participate in therapy meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Undertake Therapy Manual Handling training as required.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with grade as requested by the Therapy Managers or Clinical Lead/Senior Therapists.
  • Be aware at all times of the limitations of own knowledge, skills and job responsibility, referring to a qualified therapist as necessary.

Person specification:

Education:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent level of knowledge and skills gained through practical experience e.g. external courses, CPD portfolio, practical assessment through supervision/appraisal in a therapy unit/rehabilitation setting.
  • GCSE or equivalent in English and/or Maths.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience as a Physio or Occupational Therapy assistant or rehabilitation assistant or similar.
  • Evidence of ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Experience of supervising patients undergoing exercise as individuals.
  • Training and learning in a related area and knowledge of a variety of orthopaedic conditions.
  • Experience of facilitating classes and/or patient education.
  • Able to communicate well with people who have difficulty communicating.
  • Good team working skills.
  • Evidence of self‑motivation and ability to motivate patients.
  • Able to manage own caseload of patients with routine conditions.
  • Able to follow and progress prescribed clinical programmes with minimal or no immediate supervision.
  • Self‑motivated and aware of boundaries of own practice.
  • Experience of assessing patients requiring walking aids or other aids and instructing them in correct and safe usage.
  • Able to learn new procedures and techniques and follow instructions.
