The Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS) of the Department provides a range of services to theTrust. These include the care of medical electronic and associated devices, Training of clinical staff (MedicalEquipment Training) to use medical devices and a loan service for medical devices (the Equipment Library).
MEMS is based on two sites. The Medical Equipment Resource Centre is at the main hospital site and actsas the link with clients seeking repairs to equipment. The Centre also provides the Equipment Library functionand houses a suite for staff undertaking training on medical devices. MEMS also has electronic andmechanical workshops within the main department which is at the Faraday Building, on the edge of thehospital campus.

Main duties of the job

Specific duties of the Medical Equipment Resource Centre Assistant include:

  • Assisting with the operation of the equipment library.
  • Distributing and collecting equipment loaned from the equipment Library.
  • Recording details of equipment loans using a dedicated database.

Providing a reception service for clients bringing equipment for repair or seeking information about

  • Equipment.
  • Recording details of equipment repairs on a dedicated database
  • Providing information about the progress of repairs to clients.
  • Providing consumables and disposables for medical equipment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities

  • Collect equipment that is marked as belonging to the equipment library from anyarea of the Trust.
  • Deliver equipment, when requested, to users.
  • Collect faulty non-library equipment from wards and other areas, as requested,and deliver to MEMS for repair.
  • Return repaired non-library equipment to wards and other areas, as requested.
  • Liaise with users of Library service to provide information on the availability ofequipment.
  • Clean and decontaminate Library equipment.
  • Ensure that loan equipment is stored in accordance with instruction.
  • Ensure the Library shelves are tidy and well organised.
  • Provide consumables and disposables for equipment as required ensuring thatappropriate budgetary transfers are made.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Record details of equipment loaned from the library.
  • Provide monthly figures outlining the activity of the equipment library.
  • Accept equipment brought to MEMS for repair and log details of fault(s) ondedicated database.
  • Maintain the MEMS reception is tidy and well organised.

Communication

  • Following collections, deliveries or general liaison with clients, report anyequipment related problems (training issues, damage etc.) to managers promptly.
  • Liaise with managers to ensure that adequate stocks of consumables anddisposables are maintained.
  • Receive telephone calls for MEMS service; provide information as requested andadvice within limits of competence.
  • Respond to queries on progress of repairs, seeking information from database orengineering staff as appropriate.

Education and Qualifications

  • Good standard of numeracy and literacy (NVQ3, RSA 3, City and Guilds)

Knowledge and Experience

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Able to enter data into appropriate software packages enabling creation of documents such as; minutes, reports, presentations etc
  • Understanding of the hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: Electricity – medium voltages and currents Cross – infection
  • Experience of, or interest in technology.

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent Keyboard Skills
  • Able to concentrate for long periods to permit accurate data entry to computer databases.
  • Concentration required for safe driving.
  • Excellent telephone manner.
  • Able to communicate coherently and accurately with Trust staff at all levels
