Main duties of the job
In a complex, tertiary referral environment, the role involves advanced abdominal and obstetric imaging, CT, MRI, and MSK US duties. You will perform ultrasound examinations independently across the department, inpatient wards and intensive care units, including bedside scanning of critically ill patients.
Support one‑stop liver clinics and urgent same‑day referrals.
Involvement with Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) and complex liver imaging.
Provide teaching to registrars, student sonographers and radiographers.
Outcome: contribute to research, audit, service development, and continuous quality improvement.
- Detailed responsibilities
- Provide timely, efficient, and courteous ultrasound services at agreed standards.
- Take responsibility for own caseload, report independently, and discuss outcomes with patients.
- Adhere to mandatory codes of practice and professional guidelines.
- Communicate complex information to patients, staff and carers and secure informed consent.
- Position patients accurately and adapt techniques to patient needs.
- Deputise for the Clinical Specialist Manager in their absence.
- Contribute to staffing strategy, workload and resource allocation.
- Take on day‑to‑day management duties within the department.
- Supervise, train and appraise student sonographers and radiology registrars.
- Assess registrar competency before independent lists and on‑call duties.
- Maintain recognised professional qualification (HCPC or equivalent).
- Hold postgraduate medical ultrasound qualification from an accredited HEI.
- Engage in CPD and evidenced activities.
- Develop and maintain effective working partnerships and stakeholder communication.
Person specification
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proven postgraduate experience in general medical scanning (upper abdominal, pelvic, small parts including testes, thyroid).
- HCPC registration.
- Recent NHS experience.
- PGDip in medical ultrasound or equivalent.
- Proven teaching experience.
- Paediatric ultrasound experience.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Participation in departmental research and audit.
- Experience in contrast‑enhanced ultrasound (CEUS).
