The Department of Paediatrics sees children from newborn to 17 years old and includes paediatric majors and minors areas, resuscitation, and a paediatric clinical assessment unit. The Band 5 nurse will work across all areas, supported by a senior nurse and a multidisciplinary team including youth workers, health visitors, trauma nurses and the safeguarding team. The role requires following all KCH policies, procedures and standards, identifying learning needs, and contributing to the learning of colleagues.
Responsibilities
Practice within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
Assess, plan and evaluate individualised programmes of care for patients using a family‐centred approach to care.
Assist senior staff in identifying vulnerable adults and children at risk of abuse.
Support and assist in the health education of patients and their families.
Deliver care in accordance with latest evidence‐based practice guidelines.
Ensure that patients and next of kin are informed and consented appropriately.
Maintain up‐to‐date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements.
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Practice within the unit philosophy and support junior colleagues, students and visitors.
Know the own role within the Trust Major Incident Policy and apply it where appropriate.
Assist in the teaching and practice development of junior colleagues and students.
Use information and research findings to support evidence‐based practice.
Participate in research, audit, and the development of protocols and guidelines to enhance best practice.
Assist in auditing these protocols and guidelines.
Participate in Trust and Care Group initiatives to develop nursing practice.
Manage an agreed workload with support from colleagues and senior staff.
Ensure that all Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to by colleagues.
Work within and support the multidisciplinary team, maintaining effective communication and professional relationships.
Participate in monitoring standards of hygiene and cleanliness on the ward or department.
Share knowledge and skills with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Participate in reflection and/or Clinical Supervision sessions as provided.
Observe personal responsibility for resource management and the duty of care for health, safety and wellbeing of all.
Qualifications
Paediatric Registered Nurse with active NMC registration and acute experience within a paediatric setting.
Proficiency in dispensing and administering oral and IV medication.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members.

Achieve a range of clinical competencies as required within the Trust and Care Group.
Maintain your own personal and professional development in accordance with PREP requirements and attend mandatory study sessions.
Participate actively in your performance appraisals.
Keep up to date with NMC and Trust guidelines, protocols and evidence‐based practice.
Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct while maintaining agreed levels of competence.
You will be expected to provide high quality care for children and young people, supported by a team of experienced nurses and a paediatric development nurse. The role involves safe administration of medication, accurate documentation and excellent communication skills across a wide range of children with differing cognitive abilities. Infection control protocols must be followed, and evidence‐based practice promoted. The position includes link roles within the department.
