Senior Clinical Fellow – Endocrinology/Diabetes in Gen Paeds in London

The postholder will work within the Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes service at King’s College Hospital, providing clinical care for children and young people with endocrine and metabolic conditions. The post encompasses both inpatient and outpatient commitments and participation in the General Paediatric on-call rota. This is a replacement post. The remit of the postholder/s will be to work within the multi–disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients within the service. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job:

• Undertake daily review of Endocrine in-patients
• Attend and participate in outpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology clinics (2–3 per week)
• Receive and discuss Endocrine referrals from in-patients admitted under General Paediatrics, sub-specialty teams, and district general hospitals in the region
• Supervise and collate results from in-patient dynamic function tests on the Day Ward (Philip Isaacs Day Treatment Ward)
• Present cases at the monthly Pituitary MDT and weekly Endocrine Team meetings
• Participate in the General Paediatric on-call rota (New Contract Compliant)
• Attend the Transition/Adolescent Clinic (held twice monthly, jointly with adult endocrinology)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

• Daily review of Endocrine In-patient
• Attendance and participation at Out-patient diabetes and Endocrine clinics
• Receive and discuss Endocrine referrals from In-patients admitted under General Paediatrics and sub-specialty teams and DG external Hospitals in the region
• Supervise and collate results on in-patient dynamic function tests (Day Ward)
• Present cases at monthly pituitary MDT and weekly Endocrine Team meetings
• Participate in the General Paediatric on-call rota
• Assistance in conjunction with Consultants and more junior trainees with the teaching of undergraduates and Nurses as appropriate

• Development of confidence in the In-patient and Out-patient management of Endocrine disorders and Type 1 diabetes

Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies. Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans. Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust.

Person specification:

• Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent medical APLS or equivalent Level 3 safeguarding Certification MRCPCH (or equivalent). Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice. Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD, PhD).
• Training and Experience: Experience in management of acute paediatric medical conditions, with at least 2 years post-foundation training.
• Administration/Management and Leadership: Experience in day to day organisation of Paediatric services in a busy Teaching Hospital. Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams. Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes. Management course and/or qualification.
• Research: Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change. Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research. Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Paediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes or related fields. Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
• Teaching: Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation. Teaching skills course/qualification.
