The Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT Department employs over 20 staff and has an annual budget of over £2.5million.
The department is highly specialised and services include: a comprehensive range of nuclear medicine including SPECT-CT, PET-CT, non-imaging tests, therapeutic services with inpatient facilities and osteoporosis screening.
The department also has commitment to clinical research and development.
The main roles of the job include
- The post holder will work unsupervised but under guidance from Lead Clinical Technologists and the Chief Technologist
- The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of high quality diagnostic images for all Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT investigations.
- An ability to interpret the standard operating procedures is essential in order to adapt/manipulate protocols depending on the clinical indications.
- He/she will encourage the highest professional and technical standards in all staff by personal example and constructive supervision.
Main duties of the job
- Perform all diagnostic Nuclear Medicine procedures, including SPECT-CT, PET-CT, and DEXA, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and yourself in line with Health & Safety protocols.
- Administer intravenous radiopharmaceuticals and drugs for diagnostic purposes, adhering to applicable legislation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure that junior staff and students comply with SOPs, protocols, and guidelines, taking responsibility for their adherence and performance.
- Respond to scheduling requests from patients and referrers, ensuring that all nuclear medicine studies align with departmental protocols.
- Assess and evaluate patient and referrer needs, collaborating with clinicians to tailor procedures and meet individual patient requirements.
- Obtain patient consent, confirm patient identification, and gather all relevant clinical details before imaging, in compliance with Trust policies and professional regulations.
- Collaborate with clinical scientists to ensure the timely processing and readiness of diagnostic images.
- Maintain safe working practices when handling radioactive materials, blood samples, and hazardous waste, adhering to government legislation and departmental policies.

- Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Safely unpack and assay radiopharmaceuticals in compliance with safety protocols.
- Accurately prepare, dispense, and administer diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and medications as prescribed by legislation and SOPs, maintaining aseptic techniques.
- Perform and analyse in-vitro laboratory procedures, ensuring all measurements are accurate and preparing results for reporting.
Patient Management and Care
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care while upholding confidentiality and respect, in line with departmental and Trust policies.
- Take responsibility for preparing patients for imaging studies, ensuring that all procedures are thoroughly explained in a clear, understandable manner (with an interpreter if necessary).
Confirm patient identification, obtain consent, and ensure all relevant details are documented.
Health & Safety / Radiation Protection
- Implement universal precautions when handling and disposing of unsealed radioactive materials, blood products, syringes, bodily fluids, and other hazardous materials, following departmental protocols and government regulations.
- In the event of a spill or accident, promptly localize, contain, and decontaminate the area to minimize the spread of radioactive or hazardous materials.
- Participate in daily radiation monitoring, regularly check sealed sources, and maintain a record of results.
- Report any adverse incidents or potential risks to the appropriate personnel, ensuring compliance with safety regulations in a secure working environment.
- Safely use patient immobilization devices and supports as needed to ensure diagnostic accuracy during imaging studies.
- Safely transfer patients from beds or chairs to imaging tables using or without devices, in accordance with the Manual Handling policy.
Clinical Audit and Quality Monitoring
- Engage in clinical audit reviews and quality monitoring programs to ensure high standards of service.
- Perform quality assurance (QA) testing on diagnostic equipment to verify operational readiness, and conduct daily radiopharmacy QC testing on dose calibrators to ensure accurate radiopharmaceutical dosing.
- Report / Escalate equipment discrepancies or faults promptly and support troubleshooting efforts under the guidance of the immediate supervisor to enable quick remedial actions.
Education, Training, and Staff Development
- Provide patients with clear, accessible written and verbal information regarding their treatment in line with Departmental / Trust standards.
- Participate in the delivery of educational programs for clients, carers, and staff, adapting content to meet specific needs and implement changes accordingly.
- Support training programs for staff, identifying gaps in knowledge and tailoring education to improve Nuclear Medicine practices and patient care.
- Deliver lectures for university courses affiliated with King’s College Hospital and actively participate in educational events provided by the Trust and the primary care sector.
- Attend relevant meetings and conferences to stay informed about current issues within the Trust and the broader specialist services locally and nationally.
- Participate in and support Trust-approved research projects within the department.
- Present lectures, seminars, and posters regularly and contribute to publications in relevant national journals or media outlets.
