Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics - Upper Limb, Hand and Wrist in London

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Princess Royal University Hospital, a division of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Trauma & Orthopaedic Upper Limb Surgeon with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery. The appointed Locum Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon will join a friendly and supportive team of 12 Consultants and 3 Associate Specialists that works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams at the Princess Royal University Hospital and Denmark Hill. There may also be opportunities for cross-site working between Denmark Hill site and the South sites, subject to agreement and needs.

Main duties of the job:

• The post holder will work at the PRUH site supporting delivery of care within the PRUH Trauma & Orthopaedic department.
• The PRUH Orthopaedic Unit has a 1:8 weekday and 1:12 weekend Trauma on-call rota.
• The postholder will be expected to have a strong and developed interest in upper limb surgery.
• The Trauma in-patients are based in a purpose-designed 28 bed ward for Hip fracture patients and other Surgical wards for overflow.
• There is a full component of nursing and physiotherapy, 24/7 for hip and other fragility fractures.
• There is a dedicated Children’s ward at the PRUH.
• ITU facilities are available at the PRUH or Denmark Hill.
• The Orpington Elective Orthopaedic hospital is an elective centre with four laminar flow theatres, an admissions lounge and two wards of 19 and 28 beds.
• There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit at the PRUH, with 6 theatres, Mon-Fri and some Sat working, with approximately 12 Trauma & Orthopaedic lists per week, shared with other specialties.
• The unit is equipped to do U/Limb, Lower Limb and some types of Foot & Ankle day surgery, elective and trauma cases.

Key duties and responsibilities:

• Provide high‑quality care service to patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties.
• Share responsibility for 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues’ leave and short‑term sickness.
• Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners.
• Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties.
• Contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
• Attend outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals.
• Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests within the Trust’s R&D framework.
• Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity & Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
• Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan.
• Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
• Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.
• Work with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure productivity of staff and enhance job satisfaction.
• Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with departmental managers.
• Comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies.
• Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistent with evidence‑based practice and maintaining patient safety.
• Contribute to Consultant‑led 7‑day services if future developments arise.

Person specification:

• FRCS (Ortho) MD
• Full registration with GMC.
• Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment.

• Wide experience in all aspects of Orthopaedic Surgery, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or completed portfolio pathway application.
• Specialist training in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery.
• Specialist fellow training in Wrist and Hand elective and trauma fellowship.
• Experience in Consultant Post in Upper Limb Surgery.
• Experience in management of complex Upper Limb trauma.
• Experience in management of Trauma in the elderly and fragility fractures in particular.

• Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of orthopaedic and trauma services in a busy teaching hospital.
• Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.
• Familiar with current structure of the UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

• Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi‑disciplinary teams.
• Management course and/or qualification.

• Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
• Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
• Audit publications.

• Experience of clinical research.
• Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
• Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Orthopaedics.

• Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
• Teaching skills course/qualification.
