Contract: Fixed term 12 months (1 in 10 weekend on call rota) – Full time 40 hours per week.

Salary: £113,565 – £150,569 per annum excluding London Zone Allowance (annual).

Key responsibilities

• Provide a first‑class clinical service to General Surgery patients and maintain clinical activities.
• Effective leadership of all staff engaged in the specialty.
• Sustain and develop teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London.
• Conduct all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.
• Maintain business plans and development strategies for the specialty, division or Trust.

Main duties of the job

• Work within the multi‑disciplinary team delivering and developing care for surgery patients.
• Play an active role in the general workload of the department while committing to teaching and training of junior staff.
• Contribute to development and delivery of surgical services depending on interests and experience.
• Collaborate with the Clinical Director, General Manager and Head of Nursing for strategic direction.

Detailed clinical responsibilities

1. Provide comprehensive General Surgery services and manage relevant duties for the department.
2. Share responsibility with other surgeons for 24/7 coverage on the rota, covering colleagues’ leave and short‑term sickness.
3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff.
4. Carry out teaching, examinations and accreditation duties and contribute to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
5. Contribute to departmental research interests in line with the Trust’s R&D framework.
6. Contribute to the Department’s Audit Programme.
7. Play an active role in formulating, implementing and monitoring the Division’s Business Plan—including discussions with internal and external agencies.
8. Carry out all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for surgical services.
9. Exercise professional leadership for all staff in the specialty, fostering projects that enhance post‑qualification professional education.
10. Collaborate with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and satisfaction, including involvement in the appraisal process.
11. Undertake agreed management duties with the lead clinician and Clinical Director.
12. Adhere to all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene, and complete annual updates.
13. Be accountable for implementing the Code of Practice within the department.
14. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistent with evidence‑based practice and patient safety.

Training and Experience

• Wide experience in all aspects of General Surgery, culminating in CCST or equivalent.
• Structured training with ATLS – current.
• Specialty experience in Colorectal, Upper GI or Breast welcomed.

Registration

• Registerable medical qualification FRCS or equivalent and full GMC registration with name on the Specialist Register on appointment date.
• Should be within 6 months of CCT or be in final stages of portfolio pathway application at interview.

Administration

• Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of Surgical services in a busy hospital.
• Management course and/or qualification.

Management and Leadership

• Demonstrate leadership capability within multi‑disciplinary teams.

Audit and Quality Improvement

• Thorough understanding of medical audit principles; must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
• Audit publications.

Research and Publications

• Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Orthopaedics.
• Publication of relevant review articles.

Teaching

• Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
• Teaching skills course or qualification.
