A senior clinical physiologist post has become available for providing intraoperative neuromonitoring during a broad spectrum of surgical interventions involving the cranium and skull base, the spine and spinal cord, peripheral regions, and general vascular systems. Multi-modality IONM includes the following: somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP); transcranial motor evoked potential (TcMEP); direct cortical/subcortical stimulation MEP mapping/monitoring; electrocorticography (ECoG); free-running/triggered electromyography (fEMG/tEMG), including cranial nerves; brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP); goggles-visual evoked potential (VEP)/direct optic nerve stimulation; VEP D-wave; bulbocavernous reflex (BCR); blink reflex; dorsal column mapping (DCM); laryngeal adductor reflex (LAR); trigeminal hypoglossal reflex (THR); train of four; speech mapping.
We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist (Locum Band 7 for maternity cover) who is reliable and able to work in a busy department undertaking multimodal IONM. Only candidates with IONM experience will be considered for this post.
The successful candidate will be expected to share responsibility for the day-to-day running of the IONM service, and to liaise with the existing Clinical Physiologists (Band 7 & Band 8) and Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologists.
Main duties of the job
As a Highly Specialised clinical physiologist, you will be responsible for intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), working alongside the consultant neurophysiologist. You will be expected to perform multimodal IONM unsupervised on the central nervous system, in line with departmental protocols and procedures. The service requires flexibility and is deemed essential for covering longer monitoring hours and sudden changes in demand. Only candidates with IONM experience will be considered for this post.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- The post holder will be a highly experienced Clinical Physiologist in IONM.
- Actively participates and provides specialist clinical expertise in the field of Clinical Neurophysiology, in conjunction with the subspecialty lead in providing multimodality intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). Multi-modality IONM
- Work collaboratively and cooperatively with surgeons, and other clinical staff to lead development of the Theatre monitoring service
- Performs investigations, unsupervised, to the central nervous systems with regard to department protocols and procedures in IONM
- Responsible for taking timely, appropriate action in relation to data collected i.e. immediately inform the surgeon when signals are compromised so that they can take remedial actions
- Responsible for evaluation & interpretation of data and writes accurate report at the end of procedure
- Expected to be able to work longer hours and participates in late support/stay rota
- Supports the Subspecialty Lead Clinical Physiologist in IONM in service management and policy developments and equipment procurement related to the intraoperative monitoring area of the Neurophysiological service provision

Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure all equipment is in good working order and maintain a safe working environment for patients, staff and visitors
- Participation in quality assurance programmes recording all faults and bringing to the attention of the Service Lead asap
- Operate and navigate IT systems in undertaking clinical studies

Systems and Data Management
- Relaying information and findings to Consultant medical staff or specialist registrar medical staff within the department.
- Responsible to usecomputer-based information processing for ensuring that all data relating to patients they have studied is appropriately archived onto permanent media, clearly labelled and stored in a secure place as per Trust guidelines.
- Completion of equipment check lists to ensure the use of new equipment is understood by all

- To be willing to participate in Research and Development projects as part of continued professional development as well contributing to the development of techniques and procedures of the service.
Education and Training
- Taking responsibility for own CPD with accurate and up to date record

Financial and Asset Management
- Undertake responsibility for the efficient and effective use of clinical equipment and accessories.
- Undertake simple fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of recording equipment or any apparatus within the department including care and maintenance of electrodes.
- Responsible for ensuring maintenance, repair and safe storage of all patient equipment in the departments.
