Job overview

The purpose of this post is to provide an opportunity for the candidate to experience and explore all clinical aspects of the speciality of Allergy, Clinical and Laboratory Immunology. The post holder will have the opportunity to undertake a small clinical research project to bolster their commitment to the speciality via peer-reviewed publications and/or prepare for an application for a full-time research funding to undertake a doctoral degree. Enhancing the research output of the Department is integral to the departmental strategy. The post holder will operate in coordination with other medical, technical, scientific, administrative, managerial and nursing staff in the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, including the Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory facilities.

Main duties of the job

Research

The candidate will undertake a clinical research project in primary immunodeficiency under the supervision of the Clinical Research Lead, Dr Ibrahim.

The candidate will have the opportunity to be trained to write research papers and submit them for publication in peer-reviewed journals and developing applications for research funding.

Clinical

Participation at Allergy & Immunology clinics. Participation in departmental Medical Review meetings (Allergy and Immunodeficiency) Other duties as required by the Clinical and Research Lead.

Teaching

The candidate would be expected to teach medical students, resident doctors, nurses, and biomedical scientists.

Participation in departmental seminars, clinical and management meetings.

On-call

The candidate would be expected to be available as the first on-call in out of hours rota with consultants (1:4 from home).

Employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust\’s sites as required by the service. Trust employees work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues.

  • The provision of a first-class clinical service.
  • Effective leadership to all staff in the specialty.
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP.
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies including business plans and trust strategies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Together with other colleagues to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.

  • Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • Participation in Multi-disciplinary Meetings.
  • Contribution to audit and clinical governance programmes.
  • Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
  • Contribute to the Care Group research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
  • Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
  • Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  • Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the speciality is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
  • Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
  • Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
