King's provides a comprehensive medical and surgical bariatric service for adults in line with NICE guidelines. The full range of procedures, including gastric banding, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, sleeve gastrectomy and complex revision surgery, are offered laparoscopically. King's is part of the Bariatric/Upper GI/HPB firm and comprises medical staff, dieticians, specialist nurses and physicians. Dedicated bariatric clinics and a joint specialist MDT with GSTT and Bromley run the service, performing around 600 bariatric operations each year. The overall objective of the Program is to train individuals who will be specialists in the field of Minimally Invasive HPB and UGI Surgery. Fellows must have previous experience at a reasonably senior level to manage a busy unit with complex upper GI and hepatobiliary problems and high morbidity patients such as bariatric cases.

Responsibilities

  • Outpatient and ward duties
  • Participation in outpatient clinics
  • Participation in multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs)
  • Lead daily ward rounds
  • Communicate with and advise external referrals
  • Surgery outcome/theatre exposure
  • Pancreatic resection (open and laparoscopic)
  • Liver resection (open and laparoscopic)
  • Laparoscopic/open cholecystectomy
  • Surgery for benign HPB conditions
  • Bariatric surgery and surgery for benign UGI conditions
  • Elective and emergency general surgery

Academic outcome

Conduct clinical research under the direction of Prof Ameet Patel, with the goal of presenting papers at meetings such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery.
