The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.

The post holder will be an experienced mammographer, able to assess and treat their own workload of patients/clients and to ensure provision of the highest standards of patient care. They will work autonomously within their specialist areas, consulting senior staff as necessary, and will be accountable for their own professional actions. They will lead on the supervision and teaching of Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Student Radiographers within Mammography. They will assist in the timely, efficient and cost effective management and operation of the Breast Radiology department at the Denmark Hill site and the six mobile screening vans around the S.E. London Breast Screening Programme catchment area, including legal documentation on RIS and PACS. They will participate in multiple site rotations as required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on supervision and teaching of Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Student Radiographers within Mammography.
  • Assist in the timely, efficient and cost effective management and operation of the Breast Radiology department at Denmark Hill and the six mobile screening vans.
  • Ensure provision of the highest standards of patient care and actively participate in the daily operation of the Department within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain competency in line with King’s Radiography Competency Framework and support personal development.
  • Participate in site rotations as necessary.
  • Act as an Operator under IR(ME)R, assess clinical justification of referrals to ensure patient benefit outweighs radiation risk.
  • Advocate for patients and staff to minimise radiation exposure.
  • Provide timely, efficient and courteous radiographic services considering clinical, physical and cultural needs of patients.
  • Monitor and adjust work priorities with other professionals to meet changing demands and Trust targets.
  • Be accountable for own professional actions and work within codes of Practice and professional guidelines.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of anatomy, pathology and equipment to determine appropriate imaging techniques.
  • Ensure safe use and maintenance of complex, high capital cost imaging equipment.
  • Ensure RIS/PACS documentation for each completed patient episode.

Communication

  • Receive and welcome patients and staff in a kind and courteous manner.
  • Communicate with referrers about changes to referrals after assessing justification against IR(ME)R and local protocols.
  • Deal sensitively with patients or carers under emotional stress, including the terminally ill and bereaved, and handle potentially aggressive patients.
  • Communicate complex information to staff, patients and carers and ensure informed consent for examinations.
  • Communicate effectively with staff inside and outside the department to ensure smooth operation of the service.
  • Work with other Radiographers, Consultant Radiologists and Health Care Professionals to assist with breast imaging examinations and other procedures.
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors within the department and provide timely information and urgent findings to referrers as appropriate.

Knowledge, Training and Experience

  • Position patients accurately for each examination, adapting techniques to patient needs.
  • Competent in utilisation of complex and specialised imaging equipment; operate advanced software on specialised radiological equipment requiring in-depth anatomical, pathological and technical knowledge.
  • Decide on additional views when required in line with professional knowledge.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving when issues arise, evaluating need to refer to the line manager.
  • Act as a knowledge source for other professionals and safely administer contrast media and other drugs per protocols.

Physical Skills and Effort

  • Ensure safe transferring of patients and equipment following manual handling guidelines and risk assessment.
  • Assist with changing and personal care of patients as needed, including immobile and disabled individuals.
  • Operate a wide range of radiological equipment requiring precise hand-eye coordination and post-processing of images.
  • Operate Modality and PACS equipment within a VDU environment and position patients accurately for each examination.
  • Maintain infection control measures as required.

Management Responsibility

  • Organise and manage an agreed workload with support from other professionals and senior staff.
  • Ensure adherence to Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures by colleagues.
  • Work within and support the multi-disciplinary team; maintain effective communication across Radiology and clinical areas.
  • Share knowledge and supervise training radiographers and Assistant Practitioners within the local area.
  • Manage resources and uphold health, safety and risk management responsibilities.
  • Lead and participate in the departmental Quality Assurance Programme, including equipment competencies and reject analysis.
  • Handle complaints per Trust procedures and report adverse incidents; be familiar with the AI trigger list and ensure clinical governance compliance.
  • Liaise with equipment companies in case of equipment failure and ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies including ionising radiation and infection control.
  • Support new staff in induction.

Professional & Practice Development, Training & Education

  • Act as a role model and clinical expert to facilitate development of others through example and education.
  • Demonstrate and update skills and knowledge of evolving practice and legislative requirements; provide professional support to radiographers.
  • Lead in training and development of Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Student Radiographers; train Staff Grade Radiographers where appropriate in patient positioning.
  • Manage personal CPD and support others; participate in internal and external CPD events and department CPD programs.

  • Observe duty of care for health, safety and wellbeing of self, colleagues, visitors and patients; observe Trust rules, policies and statutory obligations.
