The successful candidate will need to be able to:
- Perform chairside dental nursing duties to a high standard.
- Assist in the event of a medical emergency.
- Assist with patients who have special needs, including vulnerable children, elderly people, and those with mental or physical disabilities.
- Prepare and participate in domiciliary care for elderly patients and those who have difficulty leaving their homes.
- Perform the decontamination and sterilisation of all instruments and test the decontamination equipment regularly.
- Provide a high level of dental nursing care for all patients, including special needs adults and children, elderly, medically compromised, or anxious patients.
- Explain dental procedures/treatment to patients or carers.
- Deliver a high standard of chairside assistance supporting all grades of clinicians.
- Maintain a high level of cross-infection control.
- Be responsible for the day-to-day running of a base dental clinic and provide dental nursing cover across the service.
Main Duties:
- Act as a relief dental nurse in community dental clinics across south London.
- Prepare dental instruments, materials, and equipment for each clinical session.
- Receive and prepare special needs patients for treatment in the dental clinic under the direction of the dentist.
- Assist dental staff in the full range of dental treatment and procedures.
- Check patients’ fitness for discharge after extractions/sedation.
- Prepare and participate in domiciliary care for elderly patients.
- Have a full understanding of the current Department of Health decontamination guidelines.
- Assist with patients receiving treatment using conscious sedation or general anaesthetic.
- Reassure and inform the patient about further treatment and arrange appointments.
- Give patients, parents, or carers oral hygiene instruction.
- Assist in dental screening and epidemiological fieldwork.
- Supervise student dental nurses on their placement in the community dental clinics.
- Be fully competent in the mixing of all dental materials.
Clinic Management:
- Adhere to the department’s Infection Control Policy and Blood Borne Virus policy.
- Process and mount radiographs; clean, maintain, and test the processor according to agreed procedures.
- Manage surgery clinical waste appropriately.
- Be aware of language and cultural difficulties and deal with these sensitively.
- Keep the patient filing and recall system up-to-date.
- Take responsibility for ordering stock for the dental clinics.
- Order pharmacy items and emergency drugs for the dental clinics.
- Monitor equipment used in the dental surgery and report any faults.
