Job Overview
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to provide maternity leave cover for a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Breast Cancer Care at King\’s College Hospital. As a breast care nurse you will support patients from diagnosis through to survivorship, offering information, education, psychological support and acting as an autonomous practitioner in nurse‑led surgical, health and wellbeing, and stratified follow‑up clinics.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert communication skills and deliver care in a kind and compassionate manner.
- Care for breast cancer patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Demonstrate knowledge of breast cancer, its treatments and side effects.
- Support patients from diagnosis, through surgical and oncological treatment, to survivorship.
- Work within a patient‑focused team and contribute to the development of the breast cancer service.
- Assist in the facilitation of ongoing breast cancer support groups.
- Independently manage a caseload of patients/clients.
- Ensure patients and their families receive full clinical and social support.
- Lead the development of evidence‑based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines.
- Establish clear communication lines with primary healthcare teams to enhance community care.
- Provide and manage an expert specialist nursing service for patients with specialist needs.
- Provide expert nursing advice and support throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up.
- Maintain continuity of evidence‑based nursing care, assessing health and nursing needs of patients and families.
- Manage a patient caseload, order diagnostic tests, make and receive referrals, admit and discharge patients as required; run clinics and prescribe medicines and treatments where appropriate.
- Provide accurate care plans, ensuring clear documentation in patient records and hand‑held records.
- Be actively involved in inpatient care and liaise with ward staff for high‑quality nursing care.
- Lead nurse‑led outpatient services, ensuring consultations for newly diagnosed patients.
- Follow‑up patients and ensure they are informed about treatment options.
- Coordinate seamless service via enhanced multidisciplinary team (MDT) processes and communication.
- Lead the development of clinical protocols and strategies to enhance specialist care and equity of access.
- Review operational policies annually to meet national standards and ensure care is given in accordance with protocols.
- Facilitate timely discharge and follow‑up arrangements for patients.
- Implement and maintain mechanisms for MDT referrals to Clinical Nurse Specialists.
- Collaborate with MDT to develop, implement and evaluate integrated care pathways and documentation systems.
- Engage local community, social services, paramedics and voluntary organisations to improve services for patients and carers.
- Collect and act on service user feedback to improve the service.
- Lead the development of patient group directives to enhance discharge processes.
- Represent the service at divisional, trust, local and national forums.
