Senior Physiotherapist Specialist Adult Neuromuscular in City of London

This highly specialised Band 7 job in adult neuromuscular conditions involves close joint working with the 8a team and the consultant muscle team. The aim is to provide high-quality assessment, advice and support at diagnosis and during long-term management.

Main duties of the job:

• To provide a comprehensive outpatient physiotherapy assessment and long-term management service for adults with neuromuscular conditions.
• To work closely with all members of the MDT, including ward referrals when expertise is required and outreach to community services; to complete onward referrals and supporting letters.
• To be involved in training and supporting other MDT members in the community or DGH settings.
• To support patient information sessions online and face to face and work with appropriate charities.
• To be involved in collecting SMA outcomes measures to support the Newcastle database.
• To re-establish an online exercise/activity group for this cohort and monitor its impact.
• To be involved in quality improvement initiatives and present at local, regional and potentially national conferences in this field.

Clinical Responsibilities:

• To manage efficiently, effectively and safely all patients referred to their section.
• To receive referrals, undertake full assessment and independently plan individualized, evidence-based treatment programmes using clinical reasoning and specialist skills.
• Carry a significant clinical caseload including highly complex and diverse patient groups.
• Prioritise work considering clinical and service priorities with specialist knowledge.
• Provide patient equipment as required with safety and compliance to guidelines.
• To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of own work and team.
• Use recognized outcome measures to evaluate interventions and progress of treatment programs.
• Mentor and supervise junior staff and support workers.
• Develop new working practices and guidelines aligned with national guidance.
• Lead on clinical guidelines and local policies; provide specialist advice to MDT and external organisations.
• Participate in on-call/weekend rotas and provide holiday/night coverage as needed.

Communication:

• Effectively communicate with patients and carers; provide specialist advice to promote understanding of aims of physiotherapy.
• Share information with patients, carers and professionals regarding progress and treatment plans.
• Develop and maintain relationships with team, attend ward rounds, MDT meetings, and case conferences.
• Provide recommendations and specialist advice to MDT and external bodies.
• Represent the department at trust groups and regional events, promoting best practice.

Administrative Responsibilities:

• Maintain comprehensive and confidential patient notes and activity records.
• Manage waiting lists and follow-up appointments.
• Prepare legal reports if required.

Leadership:

• Represent the Trust at regional events; deputise for the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist.
• Manage workload, support team members, and participate in recruitment and interviews.

Research and Service Development:

• Contribute to departmental policy development and participate in service developments.
• Undertake audits, report findings, implement changes and re-audit.

Education and Training:

• Clinical educator role for undergraduate students.
• Train and assess competence of physiotherapy assistants and nursing staff where applicable.

Governance/Quality Control:

• Develop guidelines and policies; ensure evidence-based practice and audit.

Person specification:

• HCPC registration
• Post-graduate neurology courses
• Degree or recognized qualification in Physiotherapy
• Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
• Member of ACPIN
• Member of British Myology Society

Knowledge and Experience:

• Wide-ranging post-graduate clinical experience including respiratory, rehab and musculoskeletal conditions.
• Specialist post-graduate experience in a senior neurology role (acute and rehab).
• Broad knowledge of neurological conditions and neuromuscular disorders.
• Understanding of Clinical Governance; ability to apply it to Physiotherapy.
• Able to assess, plan and progress treatment.

Skills and Competencies:

• Good assessment skills and varied neuro techniques.
• Clear written and verbal communication.
• IT skills with basic word processing.
• Demonstrates leadership and motivational abilities.
• Ability to organize own workload and supervise junior staff.
