This is a new Consultant post within the Gastroenterology department, with a specific focus on Hepatobiliary Endoscopy and Medicine. The post holder will work within the multi-disciplinary team to provide and develop care for Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Medicine. The appointee will contribute to existing strengths and develop his/her own areas of expertise according to interests, ability and experience. The role includes teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

  • All staff may be required to work at any of the Trust’s sites as needed.
  • As a senior employee you will work in close cooperation with clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues to provide high quality care.
  • Responsibilities include:
  • The provision of a first-class clinical service
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / King’s Health Partners
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
  • Maintaining confidence in business plans and development strategies for the specialty, Care Group or Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality care to patients with responsibilities for all aspects of treatment and related management within the Care Group.
  • Shared responsibility for 24/7 on-call cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues’ annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract.
  • Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  • Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties and contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Attend outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group’s management team where part of the service structure.
  • Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in line with the Trust’s R&D framework.
  • Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance and Learning from Deaths.
  • Contribute to the Care Group’s Business Plan and participate in discussions regarding service plans with internal and external agencies.
  • Work within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  • Provide professional leadership for all staff in the specialty and develop projects to advance professional education and training.
  • Support productivity and job satisfaction within the specialty; participate in peer and junior colleague appraisal as appropriate.
  • Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  • Be aware of and comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental standards.
  • Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in line with evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  • Support King’s commitment to 7-day consultant-led services and contribute accordingly to future developments.
