This post has been created as a locum position (12 months in the first instance) to cover the Sabbatical period of one of the structural interventional Cardiologists. The post will therefore support the Structural Interventional Service, and in particular the TAVI service which is currently expanding rapidly to meet huge clinical demand.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be a fully trained and independent interventional Cardiologist with expertise in structural intervention, in particular TAVI. The successful candidate will be fully trained in coronary intervention and be an independent, first operator. They would be expected to undertake primary PCI on the current PCI rota, if necessary with mentored on-call commitments for the first 6 months.

The post holder will be expected to have experience in TAVI, and, where necessary, will receive training mentoring/training in order to become an independent first operator. We will also train the successful candidate in mitral/tricuspid edge-to-edge repair techniques as well as other structural interventions, depending on their experience.

This individual will be able to perform outpatient clinics independently, run catheter lab coronary intervention lists, participate in the Consultant-of-the-week and on-call rota and provide support to the service, as required. The successful candidate will support the running of the cardiac catheter lab, inpatient and outpatient activity in order to facilitate the workflow. The post will involve close working with the Clinical Nurse Specialists in order to prioritise investigation and treatment of patients.

Job responsibilities

  1. Together with the other interventional Consultants provide a service for TAVI and coronary patients. This includes all aspects of interventional treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Shared responsibility with the other Interventional Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Cardiology Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the CAG Executive and Divisional management team.
  6. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
  7. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
  8. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  9. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Cardiology services.
  10. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  11. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
  12. To undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional Manager/Clinical Director.
  13. To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
  14. To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
  15. To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Cardiology and Intervention, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • Specialist training in coronary intervention – independent coronary operator status.
  • Significant exposure to and experience in TAVI.

  • First operator TAVI ability.

Administration
Essential

  • Experience in day to day organisation of Cardiology services in a busy Teaching Hospital.

Desirable

  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

Management and Leadership

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Management course and/or qualification.

Audit

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
