Reporting to the Director of Transformation, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering our strategic transformation agenda. This is an exciting opportunity to influence strategic change, working collaboratively with key stakeholders to improve patient outcomes, optimise operational performance and drive sustainable change.

The Deputy Director of Transformation will work in partnership with clinical, operational and corporate teams to achieve positive outcomes that make a significant contribution to the sustainable provision of health services within the Trust, across the local health economy and beyond.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated individual with a proven track record for leading large-scale transformation in complex organisations. To succeed in this role, you need:

  1. Significant experience in managing transformation programmes within the healthcare sector, preferable within the Acute healthcare settings.
  2. Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans whilst balancing resilience and coherence across our services.
  3. Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to inspire and influence at all levels.
  4. Exceptional innovative and dynamic communication and problem-solving skills to provide energetic and motivational leadership which brings multiple partners together to scope, design and deliver real transformation.

Main duties of the job

This is a key senior post supporting the Director of Transformation in the development of the Trust’s transformation and change management function. This post will be pivotal in shaping the design and delivery of a wide range of transformation programmes. These will focus on productivity and efficiency programme delivery engagement with staff and modernisation of the frontline delivery using continuous improvement tools and techniques. The post will lead on reporting the activity and impact of the Transformation agenda at executive level and externally. The post holder will also be responsible for leading engagement with service staff aligning transformation planning with the annual business planning cycle and the Trust’s performance management governance structure.

Portfolio Management Office

The post holder will be responsible for the management and operational aspects of part of the Transformation department, a part of the wider Portfolio Management Office (PMO). This includes responsibility for all elements including clearly mapped processes, standardised outputs, informative performance reports, meaningful KPIs.

The post holder must ensure that the department functions such that the board and external agencies are provided assurance on the Trust’s Transformation programmes.

The post holder will require expert knowledge within clinical operations to have credibility to evaluate the Productivity and Efficiency schemes proposed and to provide the relevant detail to facilitate the Executive quality impact assessment process.

Leadership and Communication

The post holder is required to use highly developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams across the Trust, such that they understand and work to achieve the Trust’s performance expectations.

Deploy expert communication, negotiation and influencing skills to build and maintain excellent working relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders on a range of service improvement projects, driving and challenging each key working relationship to innovate and achieve reform in accordance with agreed objectives.

Deal with complex and conflicting subject matter problems or in day to day work including the management of potentially aggressive and/or antagonistic situations with staff and stakeholders within change programmes for successful outcomes.

Change Management and Project management

The post holder is required to ensure the implementation of a standardised project and change management methodology that supports governance processes and achieves measurable results but also enables engagement.

Monitor and regularly review each project milestone to ensure it is delivered on time and within budget, escalating potential variation to the project leads. Work with the clinical and project leads to determine action steps for work stream leads and other internal and external stakeholders.

The post holder will manage and monitor Trust-wide Transformation Programmes and interdependencies across all sites. Ensuring the governance, engagement, communication, financial and quality outcomes are understood and met.

Work closely with the Board and senior leaders across the Trust, external consultants, and strategic partners and ensure the Board and Exec team are kept fully up to date with progress on transformation activities, with regular reporting. This includes working with the Finance PMO for the Cost Improvement Program (CIP) and income pipeline produced.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  1. A minimum of a degree in a management related field with either a Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  2. Demonstration of specialist knowledge up to PhD equivalent within clinical operational management.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  1. Extensive experience in directing and leading strategic improvement projects within the NHS, either as a senior NHS manager or as a management consultant.
