King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) is seeking a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine for a part-time position (9 PAs). This role involves working within a multi-disciplinary team to provide and develop care for respiratory and medical services, focusing on improving population health through collaboration with community services. The successful applicant will support a virtual COPD ward and rapid access HOT and general/airways clinic for patients.

The postholder will join a team of enthusiastic and forward-thinking Respiratory Consultants and will be supported in further developing services. There is a significant commitment to teaching and training junior staff.

Main duties of the job:

  • The post will be based at Denmark Hill, with a proposed Job Plan (9 PAs) subject to review within 3 months of commencement.
  • The On-Call commitment is for a 1:9 weekends, involving weekend ward cover and medical take as part of the modernising medicine programme, along with a non-resident respiratory on-call commitment of 1 in 14.
  • Commitment to undertake routine job planned work on Saturdays or Sundays as part of the total job planned PAs.
  • Provision of a first-class clinical service.
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / KHP.
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans.
  • Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group, or the Trust.

Job responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality care service to patients, including treatment and management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
  • Shared responsibility for providing 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues' annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners.
  • Carry out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required, contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group's management team.
  • Contribute to the Care Group's research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  • Participate in audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes, and Learning from Deaths.
  • Take an active role in formulating, implementing, and monitoring the Care Group's Business Plan.
  • Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.
  • Work with clinical and other professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and enhance job satisfaction.
  • Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  • Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies.
  • Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

King's is committed to providing Consultant-led 7-day services, and the postholder would be expected to contribute equally with other Consultant colleagues.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications: Registerable medical qualification, Full MRCP; desirable: other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).
  • Registration & Interview Eligibility: Full Registration with GMC, Name on Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment.
  • Training and Experience: Wide experience in all aspects of Respiratory and general internal medicine.
  • Administration: Experience in day-to-day organisation of Respiratory and general medical services in a busy Teaching Hospital.
  • Management and Leadership: Demonstrated leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams; desirable: management course and/or qualification.
  • Audit: Understanding of principles of medical audit; must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
  • Research and Publications: Experience of clinical research; publication of relevant review articles or case reports; desirable: relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Respiratory Medicine.
