Overview
Reporting to the Camp Manager and working with a team of staff, Swim Teachers are responsible for planning and delivering safe, structured, active sessions to children aged 5–17 during school holidays. Sessions focus on developing water-confidence and basic stroke development through structured, active games and fun activities rather than a traditional learn-to-swim programme. Safety is the top priority, with close collaboration with Lifeguards to ensure preparation of areas and equipment, risk assessments, monitoring of water conditions, and incident management. All staff must adhere to Kings Camps\’ Swimming Policy, venue Operating Procedures, and Emergency Action Plan. Sessions typically run 30–45 minutes for up to 16 children, with pool times generally between 9.30am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Responsibilities
- Supervise children during breaks and swimming sessions, ensuring welfare and safety at all times.
- Oversee the safe use of equipment and monitor incidents, implementing behaviour management policies as required.
- Contribute to health and safety standards and procedures, and work with Lifeguards on risk assessments and incident management.
- Prepare activity sessions from poolside, adapting for mixed abilities and age groups (typically 5–7, 8–10, 11–14, 15–17).
- Deliver structured, active games and fun activities to promote water-confidence and basic stroke development.
- Collaborate with the team and venue staff, maintaining positive relationships with children, parents, and staff.
Qualifications
- SEQ Level 2 or STA Level 2 Swimming Teacher certification.
- 12+ months\’ experience as a swim teacher.
- 6+ months experience working with 5–17-year-olds.
- Desirable: current Lifeguard qualification (NPLQ) or NRASTC; up-to-date certification is required if applicable.
- A collaborative attitude and ability to rotate duties and establish positive relationships with children, the venue, parents and staff.
- Knowledge of conducting risk assessments.
- Ability to design, plan and deliver safe, dynamic sessions from poolside.
