Are you an experienced Manual Machinist or Tool Room Machinist with a strong background operating conventional machinery? Are you a time-served engineer who enjoys producing precision components, working from technical drawings and taking ownership of machining work from start to finish? We're supporting a leading manufacturing business in New Milton who are looking to recruit an experienced General Machinist to join their Tool Room.
This is a hands-on position that would suit an experienced machinist who is confident with manual lathes and mills and has spent significant time working within a Tool Room environment.
What's the role all about? As the General Machinist, you'll be responsible for supporting internal manufacturing and tooling requirements, producing components to specified quality standards using a range of conventional Tool Room machinery. Working closely with Production, Quality and Production Engineering, you'll manufacture components from technical engineering drawings, using your machining knowledge and experience to ensure accuracy, quality and consistency.
This isn't simply a machine operating position. We're looking for a time-served machinist who understands conventional machining techniques, can confidently interpret engineering drawings and has the experience to work independently when required.
Key responsibilities:
- Set and operate a range of conventional/manual Tool Room machinery
- Operate manual lathes, mills, drills, bandsaws and off-hand grinders
- Manufacture components and tooling to specified engineering and quality requirements
- Read and interpret detailed technical engineering drawings
- Work with engineering tolerances and understand associated GD&T
- Carry out accurate dimensional inspection of manufactured components
- Use gauges, micrometers, calipers and electronic measuring equipment
- Ensure documented process controls are followed throughout manufacturing
- Work closely with Quality, Production and Production Engineering teams
- Identify and resolve manufacturing problems using a logical and data-led approach
- Maintain excellent standards of housekeeping within the Tool Room
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company procedures and Health & Safety requirements
What you'll need:
We're looking for someone with substantial hands-on machining experience. You'll need:
- To be a time-served engineer
- A minimum of 5 years' experience working within a Tool Room environment
- Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent
- Extensive experience setting and operating manual/conventional machinery
- Strong experience with manual lathes and milling machines
- Experience operating drills, bandsaws, grinders and other Tool Room equipment
- Ability to confidently read and interpret technical engineering drawings
- Knowledge of GD&T
- Excellent understanding of engineering measurement and inspection techniques
- Extensive experience using micrometers, calipers, gauges and electronic measuring equipment
- Strong attention to detail
- Logical problem-solving ability
Desirable:
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- HNC, degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering
- Knowledge of CAD software packages
- Previous experience using CAD within a machining or Tool Room environment
