Maintenance & General Operative
Location: Darwen
Pay: £13.45 per hour
Hours: 30 hours per week
Days: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
Working hours: 7:00am-5:00pm or 8:00am-6:00pm, depending on your preference
About the Role
We are looking for a reliable, hardworking and practical Maintenance & General Operative to join our team at a waste transfer station in Darwen.
This is a varied, hands‑on position involving general site maintenance, grounds maintenance, cleaning and keeping the site safe, tidy and presentable.
The role would suit someone who enjoys working outdoors, is happy carrying out a variety of tasks and takes pride in keeping their working environment to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
Your duties will include:
- Litter picking around the site, access areas and surrounding grounds.
- Grass mowing and general grounds maintenance.
- Grass strimming around buildings, fences, walkways and other areas.
- Weeding and general upkeep of landscaped and grassed areas.
- Painting walls, railings, barriers, doors and other site areas.
- General cleaning and housekeeping around the site.
- Keeping work areas, walkways and external areas clean and free from debris.
- Carrying out minor repairs and general maintenance tasks.Basic use and maintenance of hand tools and gardening equipment.
- Cleaning and looking after tools and equipment.
- Assisting with keeping site facilities clean, tidy and well maintained.
- Reporting any damage, defects, hazards or maintenance issues.
- Helping to maintain a safe working environment for staff, visitors and site users.
- Supporting other members of the team with general duties when required.
- Carrying out other reasonable maintenance and general operative tasks as required.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally be:
- A full UK driving licence holder with access to their own car.
- Reliable and punctual.
- Hardworking with a positive attitude.
- Practical and hands‑on.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Able to work independently and use initiative.
- Happy carrying out a wide variety of tasks.
- Physically fit enough to undertake the duties involved.
- Able to follow health and safety procedures.
- Someone who takes pride in their work and pays attention to detail.
Previous experience in grounds maintenance, gardening, painting, general maintenance, facilities work or as a general operative would be beneficial, but is not essential.
Working Hours
The position is Monday, Wednesday and Friday, working a total of 30 hours per week.
You can choose between:
Option 1: 7:00am - 5:00pm
Option 2: 8:00am - 6:00pm
