Role Purpose
The Payroll Coordinator is responsible for the accurate and timely end-to-end processing of payroll for over 2,000 employees across weekly and four-weekly payroll cycles. The role supports compliance with UK payroll legislation while contributing to the companies mission of quality, ethics, and community.
Core Responsibilities
- Coordinate and accurately manage end-to-end payroll processing for 2,000+ employees on weekly and four-weekly payroll cycles
- Ensure all payroll deadlines are met or exceeded
- Reconcile payroll data, investigate discrepancies, and implement corrective actions where required
- Assist with pension administration, including auto-enrolment assessments and pension contributions
- Provide cover for the Payroll Manager during periods of holiday or absence
- Carry out any other reasonable requests in line with the role
Learning & Development
- Produce clear, well-documented payroll process notes with a focus on continuous improvement
- Maintain awareness of changes in payroll legislation and government budgets impacting payroll processing
- Apply up-to-date knowledge of PAYE, NIC, statutory payments, and payroll thresholds, including:
- Redundancy payments
- SMP, SAP, SPP, ShPP
- SSP
- Salary exchange initiatives
Team Collaboration
- Liaise with teams across the business to ensure payroll data is recorded and reported accurately and on time, in line with company policies
- Respond to payroll queries clearly, professionally, and efficiently
- Support and guide team members in the effective use of People and Payroll systems
- Produce payroll reports and provide data to internal and external stakeholders, including ONS, HMRC, and auditors
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in payroll coordination or a senior payroll support role
- Confident user of payroll software (experience with Access systems desirable)
- Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to meet strict deadlines
- Strong numerical ability and advanced Excel skills
- Proven experience handling people data professionally and confidentially
