Lead the Engineering department and provide support to Operations as well as ensuring that the Company considers and applies, where applicable, latest engineering techniques and technology.
Main Responsibilities
- Target, manage, motivate and evaluate the performance of all direct reports. To take remedial action as agreed. To inform HR of any training needs.
- Ensure the team delivers innovative designs/solutions from concept through to production within the agreed budgetary controls and timeframes.
- Ensure that the Company produces products and designs to the highest standard of quality including all safety critical items being adequately checked and controlled.
- Ensure the Company is fully aware (and utilises where possible) of new manufacturing technology and techniques both within existing and new products. Liaise with the Manufacturing Teams to implement new and improved methods.
- Ensure that existing products are further developed by the team to enhance functionality, ease of manufacture/assembly/cost out.
- Regularly review the full Company product range and make recommendations to the Exec/Sales Team regarding rationalisation.
- Investigate, validate, authorise and communicate effectively engineering changes and new product releases to all relevant teams.
- Control and monitor the R&D budget to ensure spend is effective and within agreed limits.
- Ensure that the Company is fully compliant with new and upcoming statutory requirements, recommend changes to the Operations Manager/Managing Director regarding technical aspects of the markets served.
- Investigate available sources of funding and opportunities within the industry.
- Act as the Company’s technical representative/expert witness as required.
- Oversee the Quality Systems and Policies ensuring compliance, checks and controls.
- Ensure that any customer complaints regarding design or quality are fully and professionally investigated and followed up appropriately.
- Provide a professional and accurate advice to all customers when answering technical questions.
- Lead large complex projects and where necessary, work with the senior team to produce capital investment proposals to enable said projects.
- Help solve production design problems and help with any difficulty the production staff may have and look for ways to ease problems.
- Provide support for Sales/Commercial and liaise with the Purchasing Department.
- Any other duties deemed reasonable on request.
The Candidate
- Experience within an Engineering Design department covering structures / Chassis design and components (Vehicle Transport sector preferred).
- In depth Engineering knowledge covering an understanding of stress analysis and Metallurgical / Metallurgy.
- Management of a small team of designers and workshop staff for prototype production and jig manufacture.
- Experience of shop floor interaction to implement changes to design and improve efficiencies and product features.
- Requirements for occasional customer visits to discuss product technical issues and new product development opportunities.
- Good working knowledge of costing systems/BOM creation and drawing controls.
- Degree qualified BSc/HND Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience of Quality systems and procedures.
