Optical Design Engineer – SE London/Kent – Scientific Instruments

About the Company:

We are looking for a Design Engineer with significant optics and instrument development experience to join an established, expanding company in the Southeast London/ Kent area.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide full technical support for existing optical products and manage enhancement projects.
  • Lead optical design and development from concept through validation and production.
  • Translate product requirements into technical specifications and testing methods.
  • Maintain robust design control, risk assessment (DFMEA/DFM), and documentation.
  • Act as a technical authority, guiding design decisions and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Define and execute optical testing standards and analyse results to support development.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in optical system design and product development.
  • Strong understanding of illumination, interferometry, spectroscopy, and polarisation.
  • Skilled in simulation software (e.g., Zemax, CodeV, LightTools).
  • Proficient in DFM/DFA principles, tolerance analysis, and statistical performance evaluation.
  • Solid knowledge of optical manufacturing methods and precision processes.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
