We are currently seeking a Mechanical & Structural Chief Engineer. This is a technically focused leadership role that will provide deep domain expertise, an innovative and curious approach to design, ensure technical compliance and integrity, own the development and sustainment of engineering skills and excellence across a diverse and exciting portfolio.
Purpose of the Role
The Chief Engineer will be the subject matter expert for mechanical and structural engineering within high-performance, safety-critical projects. The ideal candidate will already be acknowledged as an expert in their discipline and will have significant experience gained from the design of cranes and handling solutions or the design of high integrity moving structures and associated sub systems.
The role will involve leading the mechanical and structural design approach and assurance of bespoke systems, supporting multi-disciplinary teams, and driving continuous improvement in structural standards, tools, and processes across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Operate across the full project lifecycle—from concept through detailed design to installation, test and in-service support.
- Lead and guide the application of engineering principles, methods and standards to the creation of calculations, analysis, technical reports, detailed designs, and test plans.
- Lead the application of relevant structural codes, standards, and regulations (e.g. Eurocodes, BS, ISO, DNV, ASME)
- Lead and assure risk assessments, design and safety case substantiation.
- Lead and assure that safety, compliance and cost are balanced appropriately.
- Mentor and develop engineers, promoting best practice, skill development, consistency and engineering excellence.
- Owner for discipline specific tools and processes.
Engineering Governance & Risk Management
- Lead technical review and approval of engineering outputs in line with the company’s Engineering Governance Policy.
- Apply subject matter expertise to identify and mitigate technical risks.
- Collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines and functions applying system engineering principles. Promote and ensure a requirement and compliance driven approach is applied to all engineering activity.
- Inform and promote a cost efficient approach to engineering delivery.
- Act on behalf of the business as the mechanical and structural technical authority engaging with clients, external bodies and suppliers.
- Champion diversity, inclusion, and technical mentorship.
Skills & Experience Required
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical, Structural or closely related discipline with demonstrable relevant experience.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or demonstrable capability and intent to achieve it.
- Significant experience in the mechanical and structural design of bespoke equipment—such as cranes, lifting structures, large moving platforms, or mechanisms within safety-critical or regulated sectors.
- Expert knowledge in undertaking mechanical and structural engineering calculations and analysis; including static and dynamic load analysis, fatigue, stability, and connection design, using MathCAD, and tools such as Inventor, SolidWorks, ANSYS, STAD.
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication, welded structures, bolted joints, and design for manufacture of large structures.
- Experience with relevant industry standards such as ;BS EN 15011, BS EN 13001, Eurocode 3. Lloyds Register, DNV etc.
- Refined problem solving and critical thinking skills, ability to balance conflicting / competing requirements and draw clarity from ambiguity.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface confidently with clients, stakeholders, and colleagues across disciplines.
- Organized, technically rigorous, and driven by engineering integrity and high-quality outcomes.
Location: Sheffield
Travel: Occasional travel to client, supplier, and project sites (UK and international).
