About the Role
The Technical Engineering Manager role in our Player Account Management (PAM) platform is a pivotal position responsible for guiding the engineering team through complex technical challenges, architectural decision-making, and hands-on leadership. This is not a traditional people management role. We\’re looking for a seasoned technical expert who is still deeply engaged in systems design and engineering excellence — someone who leads with code, architecture, and strategy, not just process and people. This role was created as part of our recent organisational restructuring, evolving from a classic Engineering Manager position. We’ve shifted the emphasis from people/process leadership to one of technical depth, architectural guidance, and delivery ownership. If you’re someone who enjoys solving hard technical problems, mentoring engineers through technical challenges, and staying close to the craft — this role is for you.
Responsibilities
- Own and drive the team\’s technical roadmap in alignment with business, PAM, and product goals/strategy.
- Make critical architectural decisions and support your team in delivering scalable, maintainable solutions.
- Champion engineering best practices across code quality, security, observability, testing, and documentation.
- Proactively identify and address technical debt in a structured and measurable way.
- Collaborate closely with Architects, UX Designers, and Principal Engineers — you are expected to speak their language and challenge designs.
- Engage in code reviews and technical discussions; stay close to the code even if you don\’t write it daily.
- Stay up to date with modern tools, AI-driven productivity enhancements, and emerging engineering approaches to continuously improve team velocity.
- Lead and evolve the team’s agile practices to support efficient technical delivery and continuous improvement.
- Ensure the team delivers high-quality, predictable, and compliant outcomes with minimal waste.
- Maintain visibility on capacity planning, prioritisation, and resource allocation to enable fast, iterative value delivery.
- Foster a culture of experimentation and ownership — we aim to ship, learn, and improve continuously.
- Take full technical ownership of the team’s deliverables, ensuring alignment with business priorities.
- Establish clear ownership boundaries across collaborating teams to support seamless end-to-end delivery.
- Ensure both functional and non-functional requirements (scalability, security, performance) are deeply understood and met.
- Balance product velocity with long-term platform resilience and architectural integrity.
- Actively contribute to product conversations — with a focus on technical feasibility and trade-offs.
- Guide and support engineers in their technical growth and decision-making — you are a mentor, not just a manager.
- Promote a culture of autonomy, accountability, and craftsmanship within the team.
- Provide feedback focused on technical impact and personal development, participating in performance and compensation discussions.
- Drive team engagement and wellness through technical empowerment and inclusive collaboration.
- Hire engineering talent that raises the bar technically, aligning with the team’s current and future needs.
- Act as the key technical liaison between PAM, other tech functions, and product stakeholders.
- Clearly communicate architectural challenges, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Align on cross-functional priorities and ensure delivery across boundaries.
- Actively contribute to the broader PAM organisation, supporting shared initiatives and platform-wide improvements.
Qualifications
- A strong technical leader with 8–12+ years of engineering experience, including substantial system design and architectural ownership.
- Proven ability to lead teams through technical ambiguity, scale challenges, and high-impact deliveries.
- Experienced in high performance event-driven microservices and/or native app development using best of class engineering practices.
- Strong communicator, able to translate complex technical concepts into actionable plans for diverse stakeholders.
- Passionate about empowering engineers, writing clean systems, and building lasting platform value.
- You’ve written and reviewed production-level code — and you still could if needed.
Required Skills
- Technical leadership and architectural decision-making.
- Experience with event-driven microservices and native app development.
- Mentorship and team empowerment.
