An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Transformer Site Supervisor to join a specialist power engineering business, overseeing transformer assembly, installation, maintenance and refurbishment projects across the UK and internationally.
Combining hands-on technical expertise with team leadership, you'll supervise Site Engineers and subcontractors, coordinate site activities and ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
This is a varied, practical role suited to an experienced transformer engineer who can lead from the front, support site teams and deliver high-quality work both in the workshop and on customer sites.
The Role
Reporting to the Head of Site Services, you'll take responsibility for supervising transformer assembly and installation activities, supporting site teams and carrying out maintenance, refurbishment and technical work. You'll also coordinate with project managers and other stakeholders to ensure projects run smoothly and meet customer expectations.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Supervising, supporting and coordinating Site Engineers and subcontractors during transformer assembly, installation, maintenance and refurbishment.
- Carrying out hands-on transformer assembly and electrical and mechanical installation work, interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
- Overseeing transformer maintenance and refurbishment activities, including component replacement, oil-related work, inspections and recommissioning.
- Conducting site audits, preparing reports and ensuring work meets quality requirements and relevant technical standards.
- Coordinating site surveys, project meetings, progress updates, documentation, equipment and logistics alongside project managers.
- Ensuring compliance with site-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), health and safety procedures and safe systems of work.
- Carrying out transformer electrical testing and functional checks, identifying issues and ensuring accurate recording of results.
- Using workshop machinery, specialist testing equipment and hand tools safely and effectively.
- Maintaining professional relationships with customers, suppliers, colleagues and subcontractors.
- Travelling regularly throughout the UK and overseas to support site-based projects.
Technical Experience
You will have strong practical experience of transformer assembly, installation, testing and maintenance, with the ability to carry out and supervise a range of mechanical, electrical and diagnostic activities.
Transformer assembly and installation
- Fitting radiators, conservators, cooling systems, fans, pumps and associated accessories.
- Installing HV and LV bushings, tap changers, marshalling boxes, cable trays and trunking.
- Connecting internal leads to bushings, tap changers and current transformers (CTs).
- Sealing and gasketing flanged joints, checking mechanical fasteners to specification, and completing grounding and bonding activities.
- Installing and wiring transformer control devices, protection systems and associated equipment.
Transformer testing and functional checks
Experience with the following testing procedures and equipment will be particularly relevant:
- Insulation resistance (IR/Megger) testing.
- HV withstand testing, including overpotential testing and VLF testing for 33kV applications.
- Transformer ratio testing using a ratiometer or Testrano.
- Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA), including Omicron equipment.
- HV and LV current transformer testing using CT analysers and insulation resistance testing.
- Functional testing of Buchholz alarms and trips, pressure relief devices (PRDs), MOGs, air bag relays and oil surge relays.
- OTI and WTI temperature indicator calibration and functional checks.
- Marshalling box wiring checks and continuity testing.
- Functional checks and insulation resistance testing of fans and cooling equipment.
- Bushing tan delta testing, rupture detector relay checks and impact recorder results review.
- Transformer oil sampling and tap changer ratio testing.
- Ashridge test equipment setup.
Maintenance and refurbishment

- Inspecting and cleaning components, identifying defects and supporting remedial work.
- Replacing or upgrading monitoring equipment, indicators and protection relays.
- Supporting oil sampling for dissolved gas analysis (DGA).
- Completing torque checks, post-maintenance testing and recommissioning activities.
Health, Safety and Site Management
You'll lead by example, ensuring work is carried out safely and professionally at all times. Responsibilities include establishing safe working areas, using lifting and rigging equipment correctly, maintaining good housekeeping, identifying hazards and reporting near misses.
You'll also ensure site teams follow the correct procedures and communicate any technical, operational or safety concerns promptly.
About You
We're looking for a technically capable transformer engineer who is ready to take responsibility for supervising site activities and supporting the wider engineering team.
You'll ideally have:
- Strong experience in transformer assembly, installation, maintenance and refurbishment.
- Practical knowledge of transformer mechanical and electrical systems.
- Experience carrying out transformer testing, functional checks and fault identification.
- The ability to interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams and specifications.
- Previous experience supervising engineers, subcontractors or site-based teams.
- A strong understanding of site health and safety requirements, RAMS and safe working practices.
- Good organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- A professional, customer-focused approach and the ability to represent the business positively on site.
- Flexibility to travel regularly throughout the UK and internationally.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to take on a varied, hands-on supervisory position within the power engineering sector, combining technical transformer expertise with site leadership and the delivery of installation, maintenance and refurbishment projects.
